Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and driven Customs Clearance Specialist to establish and lead our UK customs operations. This role is pivotal in setting up a new in-house customs department, managing day-to-day import clearances, and ensuring full compliance with UK customs regulations. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with CHIEF/CDS, a deep understanding of HMRC requirements, and the ability to build efficient customs processes from the ground up.
Responsibilities
- Lead the setup and structuring of the customs clearance department, establishing workflows, systems, and compliance protocols.
- Apply for and manage port/community system badges (e.g. Destin8, CNS, CCS-UK) for customs platform access across UK ports and airports.
- Handle end-to-end customs import clearance entries, ensuring accurate data input into CHIEF/CDS systems in line with HMRC requirements.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of UK customs regulations, tariffs, CPCs, and import/export controls.
- Liaise with freight forwarders, hauliers, port authorities, and clients to ensure smooth clearance of goods.
- Monitor duty/VAT calculations, arrange payments or use of deferment accounts as needed.
- Maintain accurate and compliant customs records and audit trails.
- Assist with EORI registration, license applications, and implementation of customs special procedures (e.g. IP, OP, warehousing).
- Ensure full compliance with HMRC and UK Border Force requirements, proactively resolving any queries or inspections.
- Support client onboarding from a customs perspective, offering guidance on documentation and compliance.
Qualifications
- Proven experience with UK customs procedures, including use of CHIEF and CDS systems.
- Strong knowledge of import and export declarations, including accurate completion of SAD forms.
- Proficient in tariff classification, commodity coding, and application of correct CPCs.
- Familiarity with Incoterms, valuation for duty and VAT, and rules of origin.
- Hands-on experience managing customs special procedures (e.g. Inward/Outward Processing, Warehousing, Temporary Admission).
- Understanding of EORI registration, duty deferment accounts, and interaction with UK Border Force.
- Experience with port clearance operations (e.g. Felixstowe, Dover, Heathrow) and GVMS / pre-lodgement systems.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure HMRC compliance through accurate documentation and record-keeping.
