The team…

Education, Schools and Inclusion covers a wide range of areas including school organisation and admissions, adult learning, the 0-5 Service, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, education support services and school improvement.


You will be joining our team at an exciting time! Having just been part of the Children’s Services 2024 inspection where we achieved a GOOD rating, we could not be more driven, committed and passionate about achieving the very best outcomes for children and young people. Our Virtual School comprises of a newly appointed Virtual School Head, a Deputy Head, 4 casework leads allocated across the ages and phases and 4 caseworkers, each allocated to a team. We are an enthusiastic and vibrant team who truly hold the child at the centre of all we do.


About the role…

The Virtual School is responsible for the educational achievement, engagement and progress of all Children in Care across Gateshead. We also hold an extended duty to support those children with a social worker, those previously looked after, adopted or in a kinship arrangement. The role of the Year 11 Transition and Post- 16 caseworker will involve managing a core caseload of children and young people and supporting them to achieve their best in education, training and employment.


Key responsibilities would include managing a caseload of Children in Care alongside the child/young person’s allocated social worker and designated teacher ensuring their full inclusion within education, employment and/or training. You would be the first point of contact and support for carers, social care and education/setting staff on key issues including admissions, transitions, attendance, emotional health and well-being, exclusions and special educational needs. Duties include monitoring and promoting the attainment and progress of Children in Care, finding appropriate work experience placements, supporting young people into apprenticeships and employment and ensuring the compliance and quality of Personal Education Plans.


You will need to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professionals from other services and agencies providing advice, support and challenge to schools and other professionals on outcomes for individual children, maintain appropriate records of case work, including up-to-date information maintained on the electronic database, assist in the facilitation of enrichment opportunities for children in care and previously cared for children
