Permanent Access Officer in the Adults Safeguarding and Independent Living Team (SAIL)
£37,068 - £38,058 per annum
The Person:
A great opportunity has arisen to join us as an Autism Social Care Officer in Adults as part of the Safeguarding and Independent Living Team. This team primarily provides social work case management and assessment input to Newham residents with a diagnosis of autism. We are looking for a social care officer who will have the key responsibilities to support the work of the qualified social work team and the SAIL Team Manager.
Key areas of responsibilities will include the following:
- To operate a simple duty system for the SAIL Team Autism service including taking calls from adults with autism and or their family and carers and ensuring that information is logged and shared with allocated workers and the team manager as necessary. This will include having to make case note entries in a person’s local authority electronic recording system Azeus and emailing requests and updates to allocated workers.
- To complete initial contact and assessments online with Newham residents when first referred in to the SAIL Team for autism input.
- To make referrals for Newham residents to the local ELFT Clinical diagnostic service when required
- To take on a small case load of people with autism who have low support needs but may require some reassurance and assistance with information, advice and guidance regarding local universal services and occasionally accompanying people to appointments.
- To provide support to Newham residents with autism who have issues with self – neglect and hoarding
- To refer appropriately to the Reablement service and to use other platforms to sign post residents to enhance their independence and wellbeing EG Newham Directory / ASK Sarah /JOY
- To attend Autism relevant workshops and events as directed

The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.
