An opportunity has arisen as part of continued expansion of medical science at Bangor University, whereby the newly formed North Wales Medical School seeks to appoint a position for maternity cover as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Medical Sciences (Physiology/Biochemistry).

Duties will include contributing to modules and the teaching and assessment across the School, in particular covering physiology and biochemistry including laboratory practical sessions and research projects on all taught programs across all years. The successful applicant will contribute significantly to the delivery across all of our undergraduate programmes and will be expected to develop innovative approaches to teaching and training in physiology/biochemistry or develop personal research and/or collaborative research with colleagues across the School and University.

The successful applicant will have a first degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area, PhD (or be near completion) or appropriate professional qualification in a relevant discipline eg. Qualified Physician Associate with clinical experience and a member of the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register or HCPC registered.

Research opportunities within the developing North Wales Medical School are currently focus around cancer biology and pharmacology, medicines use and optimisation, personalised medicines, clinical trials, pharmaceutical economics, policy and prescribing. Candidates wishing to be considered for a T&R (research) route will need to indicate how they will develop their research portfolio within a new and developing School.

Candidates wishing to be considered for the Senior Lecturer position will need to evidence extensive curriculum management and development experience and/or an extensive research track record.

The post is fixed-term to cover a maternity absence, and the successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as practical. At the point of application, applicants should indicate whether they are applying via the T&R (research-focused) or T&S (teaching-focused) route.

The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

North Wales Medical School

The North Wales Medical School is the focus for medical, biomedical, and pharmaceutical education and research at Bangor University. The school has a portfolio of programmes that continues to expand. These include the BSc in Pharmacology (first year of intake, 2023), Bangor University’s independent Medicine degree from 2024, and Pharmacy degree from 2025. The School’s research centres span medicines evaluation and optimisation, primary and palliative care, clinical trials, health economics, and cancer biology and pharmacology.

Purpose of the Job

  • To teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of projects and students.
  • To develop teaching materials or methodologies, for example course design or assessment and where appropriate, being module coordinator or contributing to module co-ordination.
  • To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • To conduct research (T&R route) or academic scholarship (T&S route) of leading national standard in a relevant field, with (for SL level) substantial evidence of quality and an emerging international reputation.
  • To undertake School and College leadership roles and other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School of the North Wales Medical School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Working with the Head of the North Wales Medical School, the post-holder will:

Teaching duties:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.
  • Deliver laboratory classes relevant to an area of medical science.
  • Motivate students to proactive engagement in learning, and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.
  • Act as personal tutor to students.
  • Be willing to contribute to the development and teaching of other relevant programmes (BSc, Masters, PhD, CPD, etc.) within the School.
  • Participation in academic quality assurance as relevant to the post, including having a key role in on-going curriculum review processes, including the review of modules and programmes and quality assurance mechanisms.

Specifically for the T&S route:

  • Champion Learning and Teaching and Student Engagement across the University and undertake a role (significant and sustained for SL T&S route) in the development and use of VLE and other forms of learning technologies.


Grade 9 Senior Lecturer Teaching responsibilities will include, in addition to the above:

  • Lead on aspects of curriculum development and delivery.
  • Develop collaborations in terms of teaching across subject and discipline boundaries.


Research duties (for T&R route):

  • Disseminate and publish results of research or scholarly activity (for SL T&S route) as lead author in high quality, leading, peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, articles or monographs.
  • Develop personal and/or collaborative research projects and manage projects and groups with an emphasis on research output of a quality and quantity demonstrating national excellence.
  • Evidence of generating research income from recognised research funding bodies as appropriate for the field of discipline.


Grade 9 Senior Lecturer (T&R) Research: Responsibilities will include, in addition to the above:

  • Leading on initiatives to develop and enhance the School’s research culture and activities.

Administrative and Wider Contribution duties:

  • Significant contribution to the School’s management, (e.g. participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes); and contribution to academic management, planning, governance and policy formation at School and College level.
  • Contribute to addressing aspects of student experience, recruitment and retention.
  • Contribute to the University’s mission (e.g. collaboration with other HEIs in the UK and further afield, promotion of equality and diversity, the Athena SWAN agenda and the Welsh language).
  • Contribute to the promotion and external profile of the University/College/School through the marketing of programmes and participating in University/College/School link activities and other marketing initiatives.
  • Undertake an active role in mentoring less experienced members of staff within the College/School.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of North Wales Medical School.

Qualifications/Training

ESSENTIAL

• First degree in relevant subject area eg. Physiology, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry. • Educated to PhD level or equivalent in a relevant subject area.

  • Relevant postdoctoral or equivalent experience.

In addition to the above, to be appointed at grade 8 or 9:

  • Minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment or a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCertHE) OR recognised by HEA as a Fellow / Recognised by Advance HE as a Fellow (For Grade 8 or SL T&R) or Senior Fellow (SL T&S).

DESIRABLE

  • Qualified Physician Associate or having HCPC registration.

Experience/Knowledge

ESSENTIAL

  • Experience of teaching at higher education level with evidence of successful student learning outcomes.

T&S route:

  • Experience of teaching at higher education level with evidence of excellence in teaching and successful student learning outcomes.

T&R route:

  • Evidence of research output through publication in refereed journals and/or books, articles and/or conference proceedings.


In addition, to be appointed at grade 8:

T&S route:

  • Experience of module development and delivery in higher education.
  • Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
  • Experience of teaching at higher education level with evidence of excellence in teaching and successful student learning outcomes.

T&R route:

  • Capability to develop and manage research projects, and to disseminate results through presentation at relevant conferences and publication in relevant journals.
  • Evidence of applying for and attracting and securing external funding for research.


In addition to the above, to be appointed at grade 9:

T&S route:

  • Evidence of leadership of quality courses and teaching and departmental initiatives that improve teaching.
  • Evidence of involvement in academic quality assurance assessments (e.g. annual course monitoring, internal and/or external validation panels).

T&R route:

  • Record of lead authorship of research published in high quality academic journals, as book chapters or monographs.
  • Record of management of research groups and a portfolio of research activity, development of research proposals and management of research projects.

DESIRABLE

  • Experience in the design, development and delivery of innovative undergraduate MPharm curricula, teaching and assessment strategies, aligned to the GPhC IETP standards.
  • Evidence of involvement in academic quality assurance assessments (e.g. annual course monitoring, internal and/or external validation panels, etc).

  • Excellent verbal and written skills and demonstrable IT Skills as required (e.g. VLE techniques and other forms of learning technologies).
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly in English, conveying ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative.
  • Demonstrate the ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines.

DESIRABLE

  • An appreciation of the bilingual context of health and care delivery across North Wales.
