Job description – Edinburgh LCC Grade 2, full-time.
Volunteer Tutors Organisation (VTO) is a Glasgow based charity which provides free educational support to children and young people. This is delivered through one-to-one tutoring by trained volunteers, both in person and online as well as through our Learning Hubs which are held in primary schools or community venues. Our service also runs in the Edinburgh area and we are now looking to recruit staff to coordinate our service delivery there.
The post is full-time, 35 hrs per week, Monday – Friday. Core hours are 11am – 6.30pm including a 30-minute unpaid break, Monday to Friday, but you will need to be flexible to meet the needs of families and tutors so occasional evening work will be required. We operate an Overtime/TOIL policy for additional hours worked.
Requirements
Candidates must have experience working with or supporting children and young people, and some knowledge of the education system. Due to the spread of geographical locations across Edinburgh/Lothian area, a driving licence/car is essential.
Benefits
Salary is £22,932 with 20 days holiday plus 11 days public holiday. You will have access to a company laptop and mobile phone. In place: a generous travel expenses policy, organisational pension, 4% employer contribution. You will have access to Employee Assistance Programme. Flexibility to work from home.
Responsibilities
To provide structured support to enable volunteer tutors to work effectively with the children and young people referred for educational assistance.
The role is dual focused. Firstly, you will be responsible for running a minimum of 2 after school Learning Hubs, between Monday and Thursday, from approx. 3pm – 4.30pm.
Learning Hubs support groups of up to 10 children with their homework and overall literacy/numeracy competencies, improving confidence levels and motivation to learn. You will be on-site at each Learning Hub for approx. 1.5 hours for 2 or more days each week with planning/resourcing time additional to this.
You will also be responsible for matching and pairing volunteer tutors and children/young people who have been referred to our 1-1 online or in person tutoring programmes. This will involve meeting tutors and families face to face if in the Edinburgh area or via Teams if not. You will also interview volunteer tutors and be part of our training team to induct tutors and support them throughout their time with VTO. You will have a caseload of online paired pupils/tutors who will be met via Teams from other areas of Scotland. The role will involve working from your home with occasional travel to the Glasgow office.
