Head of Surveying - Derby
Duties:
The job holder will provide both technical leadership & a surveying management framework to the SPL surveying team (UK wide) to ensure that projects are delivered to programme, quality & budget, ensuring that both robust processes & sufficient/suitable resource is in place to deliver SPLs future pipeline of surveying works.- Resource management. Working with the Design Services Director to ensure that teams are sufficiently sized, kept productive, adequately trained & motivated to deliver SPLs future pipeline of surveying works.
- Investigate new tools & technologies throughout the industry, producing business plans for those which would drive efficiencies (alongside the Design Services Director) within the surveying team & managing the implementation of those that are successfully brought into the business.
- Undertake periodical site audits and safety inspections when SPL Powerlines UK Limited staff is engaged on site duties.
- Collaborate with the ‘Head of Internal Design’, Survey Managers (UK Wide), Engineering Managers (UK wide) and all stakeholders within the business to develop a fully integrated digitised output.
- Lead estimating for future surveying bids where required, using appropriate survey managers for support.
- Ensure appropriate commercial agreements are in place for all survey packages prior to works starting & review performance at all stages of a project.
- Drive best in industry delivery of SPL surveying projects to time, cost & quality.
- Develop & maintain surveying management systems to show project status & health, whilst holding periodic reviews with survey managers to ensure projects are on track.
- Review project specific reporting, periodically produced by the survey managers, highlighting the projects status & health.
- Support & mentor surveying managers with project change & early warning notices (EWNs) to ensure strong communication channels with clients & project teams.
- Undertake business development for new surveying opportunities and support the work winning director where required.
- Authorise timesheets for the SPL internal surveying practice (authority shared with the Design Services Director) on a weekly basis, ensuring systems & levels of checking are in place for correct coding & accuracy of information.
- Drive process improvements for surveying projects alongside appropriate stakeholders within SPL & then enforce governance through SPL Powerlines IMS.
- Support project teams to effectively manage subcontractors & produce/review associated commercial agreements (with support from SPLs commercial teams) to outsource required surveying works.
- Performance Development Reviews to the surveying team whilst offering mentorship, robust feedback, training & support.
- Lead on interviews & resource discussions for the SPL surveying team to ensure the function has adequate capability.
- Input into future business plans with the Design Services Director.
- Chair & Record lessons learned at the end of each project, feeding these into competence management, training, development & future tenders.
- Ensure that up to date records of individual projects are maintained and are available for audit purpose.

- Valid PTS card.
- Degree qualified in a relevant subject matter.
- A minimum of 8 years’ experience managing large projects or teams.
- A minimum of 8 years’ experience working specifically on multidisciplinary projects.
- Technical & Surveying management experience suitable for individual to manage multiple teams.
