Emmaus Gloucestershire supports formerly homeless people by giving them a home, meaningful work experience in a social enterprise and an opportunity to get back on their feet again.
Emmaus communities are not hostels for the homeless; they provide a home for as long as someone needs it. For many, this support and stability is like the family they don't have, providing a safe environment to settle and re-build their lives. Often this is an opportunity to overcome issues such as addiction, get support with mental health issues or rebuild relationships with estranged family.

Role Summary
To undertake all activities associated with companion referral including joining and leaving the community and individual support of companions whilst at the community.
To work as part of the support team to provide outcome-based support to companions, leading on training and development of companions to prepare them for employability.
To promote companion’s wellbeing, independence and life chances through encouragement and empowerment.
What are we looking for?
- Previous experience of working with, and supporting, vulnerable adults in at least two of the following areas; homelessness, housing, drug or alcohol addiction/recovery, mental health issues and identifying personal goals and supporting through a process of change is essential
- Understanding of homelessness, housing and social exclusion
- Understanding of drug, alcohol and mental health issues
- Understanding of homelessness, housing and social exclusion
- Ability to promote the wellbeing of vulnerable people
- Good knowledge of local resources and network of local contracts
- Knowledge of housing benefit or Universal Credit
- Knowledge of current welfare reform
- Understanding of societal issues and causes of deprivation
- Ability to work in a flexible way to provide the maximum weekly impact
- A belief in the potential of each individual and an understanding of the importance of community in helping an individual to achieve their potential
- Self-motivated effective team player, with the ability to lead, work and share
- Empathy and understanding in a wide range of needs and experiences
- Empowering approach and an ability to engage others in support
- Confidence to take on and resolve difficult issues
- Driving Licence essential. Position based in Gloucester but covers all Emmaus Gloucestershire retail and accommodation premises, across Gloucestershire
In addition all members of the Support Team take part in the on call rota, to provide 24/7 support to the companions as required, this is generally telephone based but on occasion it be necessary to attend in person. Please note that the full time standard hours of work for the Support Team are 08:30 – 17:00 Mon-Fri (40hrs), with flexibility on times/days depending on support/business requirements.
