The School of Optometry and Vision Sciences are looking to appoint Clinical Tutors. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate level and will contribute to the teaching record of the School through commitment to current teaching activities, leading to the advancement of student clinical competency. The successful candidate will carry out their duties in a developing capacity with the assistance of a mentor.
Main Duties
The School of Optometry and Vision Sciences are looking to appoint Clinical Tutors. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate level and will contribute to the teaching record of the School through commitment to current teaching activities, leading to the advancement of student clinical competency. The successful candidate will carry out their duties in a developing capacity with the assistance of a mentor.
Main Duties
- Undertake teaching at undergraduate level, preparing and delivering both supervision and informal tutorials in Primary Care and Contact Lens clinics, Binocular Vision, Low Vision, Dispensing and Special Assessment.
- With guidance, supervise students through providing first line support, pastoral care, student assessments and teaching feedback, including assisting setting and marking of assignments, giving written/oral feedback and collating and providing final assessments of students.
- Participate actively as a member of a teaching team, providing support to colleagues, contributing to module design, assessment procedures, accreditation of courses and quality control processes; working with colleagues to identify the learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives.
- Supervise students undertaking clinical work, including the provision of individual feedback.
- Take professional responsibility for patient care, including further investigation and appropriate patient management and referral where necessary.
- Deliver tutorials and group work, where appropriate; Including preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery
- Carry out administrative duties where appropriate such as class record keeping, attending meetings, and report writing.
- In conjunction with colleagues, carry out course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; obtaining and analysing feedback to help implement ideas for improving personal performance.
- Contribute to collaborative decision-making with colleagues on academic content, module reviews and the assessment of student work.
- Attend and participate in the School committees and represent the School if required.
- Undergo appropriate personal and professional reviews to develop performance.
- Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.

3. Demonstrable ability to plan and prioritise own daily work and forward plan for teaching.

Desirable Criteria
1. Current GOC registration, and relevant experience in optometric practice. You will be expected to maintain GOC registration, and in order to practice as an Optometrist/DO/CLO in patient facing clinics at Cardiff University with NHS patients, register with a relevant NHS Health Board.
2. Welsh-language proficiency.

Qualifications:
- A good honours degree in Optometry, or equivalent experience and/or a related subject specialism. Current registration with the General Optical Council. You will be expected to maintain CPD points to ensure continued GOC registration, and to uphold registration with NHS Health Board to practice as an Optometrist/Contact Lens Optician/Dispensing Optician within patient-facing clinics.The School will consider applicants who are a Dispensing Optician or Contact Lens Optician and has relevant experience in optometric practice.
- GOC registration, and relevant experience in optometric practice. You will be expected to maintain GOC registration, and in order to practice as an Optometrist in patient facing clinics at Cardiff University with NHS patients, register with a relevant NHS Health Board. The School will consider applicants who are a GOC registered Contact Lens Optician and has relevant experience in optometric practices.
- Recent / current experience in an optometric clinical environment. If applying as Optometrist: EHEW accreditation or agreement to undergo accreditation upon commencement of employment.
- If applying as an Optometrist: EHEW accreditation or an agreement to undergo accreditation upon commencement of employment.
