C Toms and Son Ltd is a family run boatyard working with both the fishing industry and the leisure sector. Offering both new build and refit work for the fishing industry as well as boat storage and repairs for yachts and small craft. Alongside the boatyard the company also owns and operates the Bodinnick car ferry and the Polruan passenger ferry.
Main Purpose of Job
Working as part of our team of shipwrights and carpenters, primarily on fishing vessels either as new build vessels or refit projects. Using boatbuilding and carpentry skills to work on repairing vessel hulls and structures as well as working on the internal fit out of vessels. Our boatbuilders / carpenters also work in fibreglass.
Main Tasks and Duties
- Carrying out repairs to wooden vessels including working on the deck and hull planking using skills such as steaming wood for fitting new planks and caulking.
- Working on external areas of fishing vessels including laying wooden deck and making it waterproof, building and fitting out wheelhouse structures and fitting doors and windows.
- Carrying out repairs and general maintenance on wooden and GRP leisure vessels such as yachts and motor boats.
- Working on new build vessels and vessel refits to fit out all internal areas of vessels, working either from plan or to the owners requirements.
- Fitting out of internal areas of vessels including accommodation, wheelhouse, galley areas and fish rooms etc.
- Using appropriate fixing methods to fit out vessels made from steel, GRP and wood.
- Carrying out GRP work for new build projects and vessel repairs, including fitting out accommodation areas and fish rooms. The ability to work in fibreglass is helpful but not essential.
- Working from and interpreting vessel plans and technical drawings.
- Working alongside welders, electricians, painters and other specialist trades on projects.
- Following company health and safety policy and working in a safe and tidy manner at all times.
- Attending training as and when required to maintain existing qualifications and develop new skills used within the business.

Pay: From £17.00 per hour
