About Derrytrasna Playgroup, Breakfast & Afterschool Club
Derrytrasna Playgroup Breakfast & Afterschool Clubs offers a safe, welcoming, and stimulating environment where children are supported to develop socially, emotionally, and academically. In addition to our pre-school programme, we provide afterschool care for children aged 4–11 years, supporting working families in the local community.
Role Purpose
The Afterschool Assistant will work as part of a team to provide high-quality, engaging, and age-appropriate afterschool care. The successful candidate will foster a positive, inclusive atmosphere where children aged 4–11 years can relax, play, and take part in creative, physical, and educational activities after the school day.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in planning, preparing, and delivering fun and stimulating activities for children aged 4–11.
Supervise children at all times, ensuring their safety, welfare, and wellbeing.
Provide support with homework, reading, and quiet time as needed.
Encourage positive behaviour and help develop social skills in line with the settings policies.
Prepare snacks and assist with mealtime routines.
Maintain a clean, organised, and welcoming environment.
Build positive relationships with children, parents, and the wider team.
Ensure all activities are inclusive and meet the varying needs of the children.
Follow safeguarding, child protection, and health & safety guidelines at all times.
Support the Afterschool Leader in record-keeping and reporting as required.
Essential Criteria
Minimum of a Level 2 qualification in Childcare, Playwork, or equivalent.
Experience working with children aged 4–11 in a childcare or educational setting.
Strong understanding of the developmental needs of primary school-aged children.
Patience, creativity, and a genuine enthusiasm for working with children.
Ability to work as part of a team and on your own initiative.
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Desirable Criteria
Level 3 qualification in Playwork, Childcare, or related field.
Experience planning and leading group activities (e.g., crafts, sports, drama).
Current certificates in Paediatric First Aid, Child Protection, and Food Hygiene.
Familiarity with school-age childcare regulations in Northern Ireland.
