The post holder will engage with an academic education programme at Bournemouth University and complete an academic assignment.
Alongside this, the post holder will undertake clinical placement within an identified clinical area for 15 hours per week for a minimum of 150 hours- maximum 450, which is required by the NMC. The scope and remit will be commensurate with that of a final year pre-registration student nurse.
The purpose of this role is to become embedded within the clinical environment and develop clinical and professional skills, proficiencies and experience to enable entry as a Registered Nurse on the NMC Register.
The post holder will work as an effective member of the team under the supervision and direction of a registered healthcare professional, providing dignified, compassionate and safe care for patients and ensuring high standards of documentation are maintained.
Applicants must have a lapsed UK NMC Pin, there is no opportunity for sponsorship for this role.
- Provide a high level of holistic, compassionate and safe care to all patients, service users, relatives and visitors to the clinical area
- Respond promptly to patient call bells, telephones and other requests for help from colleagues and service users
- Ensure and maintain a safe working environment for themselves, colleagues, patients, service users and visitors to the clinical area

Please note if the role or service is relocated as part of a planned move, employees will not be eligible for excess mileage reimbursement. Travel from the postholder's home to the new work base will be considered a normal commute. Any other changes not related to this relocation will be managed according to the relevant Trust or National terms and conditions.

- Undertake, document and report routine clinical assessments. Including; basic patient observations, NEWS2 scoring, fluid balance, nutrition recording, MUST scoring, VIP scoring, Waterlow scoring, tissue viability
- Identify and escalate findings outside of normal ranges to the nurse in charge
- Escalate and report adverse incidents to the nurse in charge and via the LERN system
- Respond to a clinical emergency within scope of practice
- Prioritise tasks and daily workload independently within scope of practice
- Recognise limitations in own practice or theoretical knowledge and seek support as required to become competent
- Organises daily tasks and activity, prioritising as appropriate within scope of practice
- Planning and organisation of patient and service spaces. Including preparing for admissions, obtaining and preparing of required equipment, identification bands, ensuring call bells are within reach and that drinking water is available
- Completion of admission documentation
- Maintenance of care plans, including the documentation and safe organisation of personal information relating to patient next of kin, social situation and personal property
- Planning and organising patient and service user care. Including prioritising personal care and hygiene, promotion of mobilisation and ensuring escorts are undertaken on time
- Supporting the registered nurse with discharge processes, including the organisation of patient transfers and transport
- Organisation of the clinical area to ensure compliance with infection prevention and control, and restocking of equipment as required
- Be accountable for completion of Return to Practice competency document in partnership with the allocated registered Practice Assessor. Including the planning and organising of Tripartite Reviews
- Assisting and supporting patients and service users to meet their individual personal hygiene requirements. Including washing, bathing, catheter care, hair, nail and mouth care in a dignified manner that respects their culture and beliefs
- Assist patients and service users in the meeting of the individual continence needs. Including escorting to bathrooms, providing continence and toileting equipment, monitoring urine and bowel movements, removal of female catheters, reporting and escalating abnormalities and concerns to a registered nurse
- Meeting the patient and service user’s nutritional and fluid needs. Including mealtime companionship, fluid and food balance charts, adjustments for dysphagia, and the monitoring of capillary blood glucose
- Safe moving and handing of patients and service users as per their individual assessment and care plans in accordance with trust policy
- Proactive in the promotion of tissue viability, encouraging patients and service users to mobilise where possible, and supporting repositioning and assessment of pressure areas
- Promote patient safety with regards to falls prevention measures
- Undertake venepuncture and cannulation once assessed as competent
- Removal of peripheral venous cannula
- Undertake ECGs once assessed as competence and under direction of registered professional, reporting all results to named nurse
- Undertake wound dressings and aseptic wound care once assessed as competent
- Undertake the collection of specimens
- Completion of admission and daily care plans
- Assist with end of life care plans respecting beliefs, values and faith of all involved
- Escort patients and service users to other departments within the Trust as directed by the nurse in charge
- Undertaking and maintaining a clean and tidy clinical environment including in patient areas, store cupboards, treatment rooms, sluice and procedural equipment according to Trust infection prevention and control procedures
- Promote infection prevention and control measures amongst all patients, service users, relatives, colleagues and visitors to the clinical area
- Follow safe working practice and take reasonable measures for the protection of self and others
- Follow trust policies and Standard Operating Procedures within scope of practice and role remit
- Ensure compliance with local and Trust policies regarding learners on clinical placement.
