Job Title: External Relations Officer
Salary: The starting salary is £38,926, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.
The salary is broken down as £35,998 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £38,523. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.
Location: Westminster
Work pattern: 36 hours a week. You will be required to work some weekends and other out of hours cover with appropriate notice for which TOIL or overtime will be available. You will also be part of the ER on call-rota approx. one weekend in six.

New Scotland Yard, Westminster. You may be expected to work at other Met buildings across London as part of a blended working agreement. There are also some opportunities for remote working when appropriate.
Job Purpose
There is no greater mission than keeping the public safe. This role is integral to the success of the Metropolitan Police Service. Our communities and police officers depend on excellent communications and engagement informed by insightful policy and political advice.
In this role you will be part of a team responsible for political, stakeholder engagement alongside the delivery of visits and events. You will help us drive build advocacy around the mission and priorities set out in for New Met for London
As part of this you will responsible under the direction of a manager for the delivery of aspects of our focused engagement with political and strategic stakeholders or the running of our visits and events portfolio.
The teams work stretches across Governments, the Mayor’s Office and MOPAC, Members of Parliament,
Assembly Members, International delegations, the third sector, key community groups and business.
You will play a key role in helping us tell our reform journey in different ways whether that’s by setting up a roundtable event, hosting a reception, or bring guests up close with our specialist capabilities. Creativity will be key.
On any day you may manage a MPs case work to resolution, monitor a parliamentary debate, summaries a key stakeholder report, proactively set up a meeting between a stakeholder and a Chief Officer or support the delivery of a VVIP visit.
Key Result Areas
- High quality drafts of briefing notes and correspondence for external stakeholders
- High quality submissions, itineraries and briefing to support visits and events
- Providing policy/issues based research and briefing
- Considered prioritisation of inquiries and responses to reactive activity including rebutting inaccurate or misinformed commentary from stakeholders
- Successful delivery and ownership of small-scale visits & events
- Lead on aspects of the delivery of large scale and high-profile visits and events (e.g. manage all logistics).
- Build relationships with new and existing stakeholders to delivery advocacy for NMfL
- Proactively identification of opportunities to engage with stakeholders in support of New Met for London
- Preparing officers and staff ahead of engagement ensuring they are confident to attend and know what is expected of them.
- Support the development and delivery of reactive and proactive external media engagement/internal stakeholders.
- Successfully resolution of case work issues received from Members of Parliament and Assembly
- Membership of the ER on call-rota which will include occasional out of hours
- Excellent delivery of essential administrative duties as required by the

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- A working knowledge of the UKs political system including how Government, City Hall, Parliament and the London Assembly operate and the ability to use this understanding to influence public policy debates.
- Experience in drafting correspondence to senior stakeholders including MPs and Assembly Members
- Some experience in executing issue-based stakeholder handling and influencing plans based on an understanding of stakeholder views and their influence.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and a passion for supporting teams to tell the story of the Met.
- A working understanding of media and external relations and how both elements interact with visits and events
- Experience in planning and delivering successful visits & events which support key campaign messages.
- Experience in undertaking desktop research on key issues or policy areas and distilling long and complex documents in to short summeries.
- A track record of building relationships with internal stakeholders to achieve mutually successful outcomes.
- An understanding of effective political and media monitoring, including the use of a range of digital tools and use of Parliamentary tools (e.g. Hansard and the Order Paper) to support this.
- An ability to take and process complex information, address any gaps and produce appropriate, clear and effective communication materials
- An ability to identify risk and know how and when to escalate to ensure mitigations are put in place
- Co-ordination skills, sharing and escalating opportunities and challenges where appropriate and liaising with operational colleagues in a large and complex organisation.
