Apprentice Governance Officer Role Profile.pdf

The L&Q Apprenticeship Programme has been designed to help you get the career you have always wanted. This role provides the opportunity to start a new career path with a valued-led organisation that will support you to learn and develop throughout the programme and beyond.

NB: To qualify for apprenticeship funding, the individual must have a valid and eligible residency status. This usually requires residency in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the apprenticeship.

Our Governance Team plays a vital role in ensuring L&Q operates legally, ethically, and transparently. We support the effective functioning of our Board, committees and Officer-led governance groups, manage corporate governance processes, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and contribute to the delivery of strategic priorities. We work across the business to help uphold strong governance that enables L&Q to serve our residents and communities with integrity.
Overview of the role:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented apprentice to join our busy and supportive Governance Team as an Apprentice Governance Officer. This is a unique opportunity to learn and grow in a crucial business area, developing a deep understanding of corporate governance and regulatory compliance within a not-for-profit housing association.

The successful candidate will support the Governance Team in delivering a range of duties such as assisting with the preparation and administration of Board, committee and governance group meetings, helping to maintain accurate statutory records, and supporting policy and regulatory compliance. You will work closely with colleagues across the business to ensure effective governance frameworks are embedded in all areas of L&Q’s operations.

You will be engaged in a meaningful role from day one and accountable for your area of responsibility, while being fully supported by a line manager and mentor who will help you develop your skills. You will gain first-hand experience of good governance practices and how they support effective leadership and decision-making.

Strong organisational and communication skills are essential for this role, as well as a genuine interest in learning how a large organisation like L&Q is governed and regulated.

Areas of responsibility will include, but are not exclusive to:

  • Assisting with the preparation, collation and distribution of papers for Board and committee meetings.
  • Supporting the maintenance of accurate governance and statutory records, including filing with regulators such as the Regulator of Social Housing, Financial Conduct Authority, Charities Commission and Companies House.
  • Helping with the coordination of annual governance processes such as Board evaluations, declarations of interest, and review of Terms of Reference/Standing Orders.
  • Providing administrative support to governance projects and day-to-day tasks as required.
  • Supporting internal communications and documentation related to governance policies and procedures.

Apprenticeship learning and support:

The apprenticeship programme will support your development in corporate governance, providing a foundation for a career in governance, policy, or compliance. While undertaking your learning programme, your manager will guide your development and day-to-day responsibilities, and you’ll receive mentorship and hands-on experience from experienced professionals.

Skills and experience:

  • Enthusiasm for governance, corporate responsibility, and the work of L&Q.
  • Good attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage and prioritise workload.
  • Confidence using IT systems, including Microsoft Office.
  • Minimum 5 GCSEs including English and Maths, Grade C / Grade 4 or above.
