Purpose of post

We think that the Welsh Treasury is a great place to work, but who are we?

We are a small, dynamic Directorate which sits at the heart of the Welsh Government. We both develop our own policies and support colleagues across the Welsh Government to deliver. We are a mixture of professionals and expert generalists. We are lucky to have ten different professions in the team … but believe it or not the majority of us have a policy background. We work closely with Welsh Ministers, manage important relationships with the UK Government, and generally connect with a lot of what goes on in the organisation.

There are four divisions in the Welsh Treasury, and we all work together to get as much value from the money we raise and spend on behalf of the people of Wales.

There are three posts available in the Welsh Treasury, successful candidate(s) will be matched to one of the posts. The purpose of these posts is to support three divisions in the day-to day management of their divisions (see ‘key tasks’ section) and contribute to delivering the Welsh Government’s objectives.

Key tasks

The overarching responsibilities will be to provide support for the day-to-day management of the business across three divisions, and, to provide support for key fiscal events.

The key tasks will vary slightly depending on which role you are appointed to but will include:

Assist with the publication of the annual Reports:

  • Setting up and taking minutes at meetings; providing documents and information from a range of sources; managing Microsoft Teams channels; and following up on actions.
  • Providing support to the Head of Profession and assisting line managers during recruitment activities.
  • Support line-manager with the procurement of contracts including setting up tender evaluation panels, collecting bid assessments, and maintaining records of the procurement process.
  • Assist with the file management and record keeping for the division, using our file management tool, iShare.
  • Support the administration, design and delivery of the annual tax and fiscal conferences.
  • Coordinate and collate information for briefings for Ministers, Senior Managers and events (to include things like media trawls, intelligence gathering in the lead up)
  • Provide support to the team to deliver the Welsh Government’s input into the UK fiscal events.
  • Preparing first drafts of Ministerial diary case briefings, correspondence and other government business.
  • Support the collation and presentation of timely and accurate Performance data
  • Maintain accurate lists of suppliers and key stakeholders
  • Monitor and coordinate incoming queries

The postholder will also:

  • Keep track of the divisions and directorate meeting responsibilities
  • Play a role in delivering the divisions’ awaydays and anchor days, including booking venues, helping to arrange speakers etc.
  • Undertake finance related duties such as setting up purchase orders, putting grant payments onto the finance system.
  • Undertake other ad-hoc tasks commensurate with the role and grade
Development opportunities

Working in the Welsh Treasury offers a truly unique perspective of the Welsh Government and is a place which collectively has wide-ranging impact both internally and on the lives of people in Wales. We welcome applications from anyone who thinks that they can commit to helping us achieve our vision “Making the most of Welsh public money to improve wellbeing in Wales.” In return, we offer a supportive and high performing environment where we will encourage you to share your strengths, learn from your colleagues, and develop the capability you need for your future career, wherever that may take you.

The specific development opportunities offered by this role are:

  • Project and programme management skills and qualifications
  • Working directly with SCS colleagues
  • Event management
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Working across delivery boundaries
  • Strategic policy
  • Organisational and prioritisation skills
Other vacancy related information

There may be more than one role available.

There will be a requirement to attend events and meetings in Cardiff. Generally attendance at a Welsh Government office is encouraged and the individual would be expected to attend the office at least twice each month but may be subject to change depending on monthly events/ meetings.

A reserve list may be held for this opportunity. Any candidate who is successful in being offered a reserve status, will remain on the reserve list for 12 months.

In the event of a large number of applications, an initial sift will be conducted against the lead assessment criterion: Behaviour 3, working together. Candidates who pass the initial sift will be progressed to a full sift or progressed straight to assessment/interview.
