East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT) provides a comprehensive service in orthopaedic specialties for the surrounding districts of Hastings and Eastbourne. The post is required to support the medical needs of the trauma patients and supporting/lead the multidisciplinary team based on the trauma wards to enhance the quality and recovery of patients following trauma episodes.
This is a new locum post for a Consultant in Orthogeriatric Medicine in the Trauma and Orthopaedic service at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, with a view to progress the role into a permanent role within the service.
The successful candidate will be part of the multi-disciplinary team approach to care within the specialty of Trauma and Orthopaedics. The unit is internationally and nationally recognised. Professor Briggs’ Getting Right First Time programme has been established in our department and we have recently hosted two large Acute/Foundation Trusts, Trauma & Orthopaedic teams on the recommendation to them from Professor Briggs to work closely with us to develop and improve their pathways of care.
Medical care of Orthogeriatric patients on our Trauma wards, predominantly fractured neck of femur patients.
Maintaining the highest clinical standards in the management of Orthogeriatric patients on the trauma unit and other clinical areas, as required.
To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Orthogeriatric patients on the trauma unit, in line with national and local clinical guidelines.
Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and Allied Health Professionals.
To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
To actively participate in both departmental and Trusts matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
To attend meetings as appropriate.
Fulfil duties of weekly timetables, including out of hours or weeks with prior agreement.
The post holder we be expected to record their findings and generally investigate and prepare the patients for Orthopaedic surgical operation or other treatment and maintain the patients’ medical care during their inpatient episode.
The post holder will be required to attend the 8am daily Trauma meeting when on duty and may be required to present patients as needed.

The appointee must have an established and in-depth knowledge of geriatrics with a special interest in Orthogeriatrics. The appointee will be based at Conquest Hospital but this may change depending on service need.
The orthopaedic department has long standing links with both GKT Medical School in London and Brighton Medical School and we receive regular medical students within the Orthopaedic department from both of these institutions.
