A message from the Principal:

As Principal, I am thrilled at the prospect of introducing you to Outwood Academy Carlton, a proud member of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, serving the community of Royston, Carlton and its surrounding areas. Our core purpose, to ‘Continually and repeatedly grow, well-informed, ‘good’ human beings who are armed with the character, skill, emotional intelligence and qualifications to be personally, occupationally and/or professionally successful people,’  is at the heart of everything we do. This aligns seamlessly with the Trust’s vision of ‘students first, raising standards and transforming lives,’ ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.

I am immensely proud that our students possess a strong moral code and behave well in and outside of lessons and they actively contribute to the wider community.  Our students display an in-depth understanding of protected characteristics and understand the importance of fundamental British values. As an advocate of research informed pedagogical practice I am passionate about our 5 pillars of learning. Equally, I am proud of how we explicitly teach behaviours through our personal development curriculum and our positive discipline for learning and life practices. This allows all students to understand how to be safe, be responsible, be respectful and be extraordinary in the 21st century. The unwavering dedication of our staff, who know the needs of students and respond accordingly are pivotal in delivering this holistic education.

We are seeking prospective colleagues who share our passion for developing well-rounded individuals and align with our core purpose. I look forward to welcoming you into our academy.

Mr Paul Taylor

We are looking to recruit an individual who has high aspirations for students, who is committed and passionate about learning and who has the skills and determination to make a significant different to the lives of students and in sharing our single goal of ‘Students First’.

The role of Teaching Assistant across our Academy is to promote the learning and welfare of students by providing practical and learning support to students, including those with statements of special educational needs, under the direction of the class teacher.

Outwood Grange Academies Trust provides a high-quality learning and cultural environment that inspires and motivates children. Whether you are ambitious for progression, or determined to be an outstanding member of our support team, Outwood Academy Carlton is the place for you.

Outwood Academy Carlton is an Ofsted Good rated, 11- 16 academy based in the friendly, attractive village of Carlton in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The Academy became part of the Outwood Family of Schools in 2016.

In October 2024, Ofsted noted that “students are taught to be ‘good human beings’ as part of the ethos at Outwood Academy Carlton” and that they “have a strong moral code and behave well in and outside of lessons”, including contributing to the wider community.  Ofsted also noted that “leaders are determined that all students should succeed and be well prepared for life through a curriculum that develops their knowledge, skills and character”.  Furthermore, Ofsted acknowledges that students who regularly attend school make strong progress as a result of the school’s rapid improvement.

We believe that learning should be both enjoyable and enriching. We are innovators with a knowledge-rich curriculum, designed to personalise learning for every student, helping them to reach their potential.

With a holistic view of education, we value vocational, practical, creative and academic excellence equally, creating an environment where every student can shine.

We have won numerous awards as a school and we have been accredited with the prestigious IQM Award, in addition to being an IQM Centre of Excellence, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us. We are also delighted to have been awarded the United Against Bullying Bronze Award from the Anti-Bullying Alliance of the National Children’s Bureau which demonstrates our commitment to stopping bullying and improving the wellbeing of our students.  We are also very proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

We promote a culture of high expectation and we foster a highly positive environment of respect, recognition and mutual support. We promote equality and value  diversity. All staff roles contribute to this ethos.

You will be joining a highly regarded Trust that prides itself on a strong shared vision, innovative practice and effective organisation. We guarantee every member of staff CPD and development opportunities and various routes for career progression within the Trust.
