Build a brilliant future with Hiscox

About Hiscox:
As an international specialist insurer we are far removed from the world of mass insurance products, selectively focusing on key areas of expertise and strength, all of which is underpinned by a culture that encourages us to challenge convention and always look for a better way.
Defined by our strong moral fibre we prioritise above all else the principle of doing what we say we will. Insuring the unique and interesting, our search for talent is the same. We empower our people to think creatively, challenge the status quo and approach things with a solutions focused lens. This results in us being able to provide the type of insurance solutions which are often too complex for other insurance companies, we find a way where others give up.
If you thrive in a challenging and collaborative environment where you are trusted to work instinctively and know the company will stretch you to your full potential look no further.
About the Team
Hiscox have been writing an Energy book as part of the wider Marine, Energy & Specialty (MES) Division within Hiscox London Market for many years and is viewed as one of the leading Markets in the class. The Energy portfolio is written alongside Marine Hull & War, Marine Cargo and Marine & Energy Liabilities.
Starting off as an Upstream portfolio we have diversified our product offering in line with the requirements of our clients, the market and the broader ‘Energy Transition’. The Energy line at Hiscox currently underwrites a broad spectrum of the Energy value chain including Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, Renewables and Power. Whilst we underwrite out of London we have a truly global footprint and a broad underwriting appetite. Our team is currently comprised of 11 underwriters who are closely supported by a team of engineering, claims, pricing, exposure management and operations personnel.
The key to our success is our deep technical understanding of the products we sell and the activities our clients perform which enable us to identify the best risks and differentiate ourselves from our competitors. This is your opportunity to become part of it and help influence and shape our offering.
The role:
We are looking for an experienced Senior Underwriter to become the focal point of our Downstream offering. Alongside this, the role will have a broad remit in other segments of the onshore energy market. The ideal candidate will also have experience writing onshore construction and power generation risks.
The key to success in this role will be a detailed underwriting approach with a strong grasp of the technical aspects of this class and a good understanding of market practices. The right candidate should be able to underwrite independently and also work on portfolio level tasks like performance analysis, rating adequacy, exposure management, etc. The role also requires strong relationship management, organisational skills and the ability to think ahead and use initiative. You will need to demonstrate a skill for working and building relationships with brokers & clients and driving these toward profitable business.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop a Downstream business plan and strategy alongside the Power and Renewables Line Underwriter which complements our current energy offering.
  • Underwrite a book of Downstream risks in line with individual Underwriting Authority and wider Portfolio guidelines.
  • Carry out risk analysis utilising modelling & technical guides, tools and group guidelines.
  • Develop & strengthen product and underwriting knowledge and judgement including review of wordings.
  • Monitor and keep abreast of changes in underwriting, regulation and compliance.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key brokers and clients including representing Hiscox at meetings, conferences, client visits, etc.
  • Work effectively with key internal stakeholders including Engineering, Pricing, Claims, Exposure Management and Operations.
  • Train supporting underwriters in the class specifics and enable them to attend client and broker meetings, triage, take on underwriting processes and help meet the business plans.
  • Work with the operations team to ensure the required underwriting and compliance guidelines are followed and documentation and recording systems remains up to date and accurate.
Person Specification:
  • Have demonstrable and meaningful experience underwriting Downstream risks in the London market.
  • Have experience in underwriting an open market portfolio preferably in a lead capacity.
  • Have strong analytical capabilities to assess risks and demonstrate accurate judgement.
  • A driven and curious individual who demonstrates interest and enthusiasm to learn.
  • Able to work independently but also be an effective team worker.
  • Have an established market presence amongst key brokers and preferably clients too.
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to work effectively and maximise the potential of our Engineering/Pricing/Catastrophe Modelling team.
  • Be able to build strong relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Work under pressure whilst maintaining a high attention to detail and ensuring that deadlines are met.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to travel as needed and attend and host business social events.
  • Progress in ACII examinations or a commitment to complete them.
