Job Description

Materials - Failure Investigator

Full time

Derby

This position is being advertised to form a pipeline of candidates for current and future positions within Civil Aerospace, therefore applicants should not expect feedback immediately. However, we will endeavour to review your CV in a timely manner.

What you will be doing

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Materials Engineer to join the Lifecycle Services team within the Manufacturing Engineering & Materials function, based in Derby.

As a Materials Engineer , you will provide knowledge and expertise to support fleet safety and reliability, via the application of materials science and ‘forensic-style’ analysis of failed components (or systems) by developing a fundamental failure mode understanding to feed into service management and future programmes. You will collaborate with other internal departments, specialists, external customers and governing bodies.

Why Rolls-Royce?

Rolls-Royce is one of the most enduring and iconic brands in the world and has been at the forefront of innovation for over a century. We design, build and service systems that provide critical power to customers where safety and reliability are paramount.

We are proud to be a force for progress, powering, protecting, and connecting people everywhere.

We want to ensure that the excellence and ingenuity that has shaped our history continues into our future, and we need people like you to come and join us on this journey.

We’ll provide an environment of caring and belonging where you can be yourself. An inclusive, innovative culture that invests in you, gives you access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities where you can grow your career and make a difference.

What we offer

We offer excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

Responsibilities

You will resolve investigations through evaluative methods and technical knowledge/justification. You will also:

  • Analyse factual information from multiple sources, interpret results and identify effective solutions by applying your own technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgement.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to identify all information pertinent to the investigation, liaise with other departments for route cause understanding and present results to customers.
  • Be responsible for defined technical packages of work providing leadership and delivery against programme milestones within agreed costs, timescales and quality requirements.
  • Be a point of contact within Materials Engineering and to share subject matter knowledge across the function. This may include providing advisory services to designated customers, influencing their peer group, representing senior departmental staff and acting as advisor / coach on matters where they are technically authoritative.
  • Understand company business objectives and ensure that the work they do supports this; to act in accordance with both the company values and those associated with being a professional engineer.
  • Actively promote, encourage and support the identification and implementation of continuous improvement both within and outside their immediate sphere and prompt action across the wider team.

Who we’re looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we put safety first, do the right thing, keep it simple and make a difference. These principles form the behaviours that guide us and are an essential component of our assessment process. They are the fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

  • Bachelor's degree, Master's or PhD in Science and/or Engineering disciplines.
  • An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking to a range of technical problems.
  • Knowledge and experience of product integrity / product safety / liability and certification frameworks.
  • Ability to work with a team but also capable of working independently
  • Membership in a relevant professional body appropriate to the region. In the UK - attained / working towards Chartered status is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience of laboratory equipment (e.g. SEMs) is preferred but not essential.

We are an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives which are crucial to innovation and problem solving. We believe the more diverse perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of caring and belonging, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
