Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Lead Naval Architect to take a senior role in our engineering team at Navantia UK. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and skilled individual to lead naval architecture activities across the full lifecycle of naval projects, from initial design through to construction and in-service support. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all naval architectural aspects of the design meet both safety standards and operational requirements.
As the Lead Naval Architect, you will work closely with other engineering disciplines, including structural engineering, marine engineering, and systems engineering, to ensure that the design and construction align with project objectives. You will provide leadership and technical guidance to the naval architecture team, ensuring that designs are not only functional but also innovative and efficient.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the naval architecture team, providing technical direction and ensuring the functional and structural integrity of naval ships.
- Oversee the design and optimization of ship hull forms, weight estimating, stability, manoeuvring and seakeeping characteristics, ensuring they meet operational, safety, and performance standards.
- Collaborate closely with other engineering teams, including structural engineering, marine engineering, and systems engineering, to ensure integrated and robust designs.
- Manage the naval architecture design process, ensuring timely delivery, adherence to budget, and compliance with relevant regulations.
- Conduct and oversee key naval architecture analyses, including stability, weight control, resistance, propulsion, manoeuvring and seakeeping.
- Oversee the development of design documentation, including technical reports, specifications, and drawings.
- Ensure the integration of industry standards, regulations, and classification society rules into design specifications.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level naval architects, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with clients and stakeholders, providing technical advice and expertise to support project development and decision-making.
- Drive innovation in naval architecture design and engineering practices, contributing to the continued success of Navantia UK in the naval sector.
Qualifications
Qualifications and Experience:
- A Chartered Engineer with a degree in Naval Architecture, or a related field (Masters or equivalent is desirable).
- Significant experience (10+ years) in naval architecture, with a strong background in naval or marine engineering projects.
- Proven expertise in ship design, hull form optimization, stability analysis, and performance assessment for complex naval systems.
- Familiarity with naval and maritime design codes, including classification society rules and regulations.
- Strong experience with naval architecture analysis software, ideally including CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), and other industry-standard tools.
- A deep understanding of weight control, resistance, propulsion, and seakeeping analysis.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Leadership experience, with the ability to guide and mentor a team of naval architects to achieve high levels of performance and innovation.
- A passion for engineering excellence, continuous improvement, and the advancement of naval architecture practices.
