The James Dyson Foundation – Dyson’s international charity – aims to inspire the next generation of engineers. The Foundation provides free educational resources and workshops to schools to give students a glimpse into the exciting world of engineering. The Foundation also supports university students through the James Dyson Award, an international design competition. The James Dyson Foundation sits within the Weybourne Group Office at the Dyson campus in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. The Foundation also has representatives working in the US, Singapore and Malaysia.

Weybourne Group is the holding company for Dyson Technology Ltd, Dyson Farming and other diverse business interests. Outside the operating businesses, Weybourne manages an investment portfolio and provides financial and other professional support to the Dyson family, their estates and personal business interests. The Group covers a wide range of sectors including farming, financial and commercial property investments and residential property. We currently have a team of around 85 employees whose roles cover accountancy, financial control, tax and treasury, commercial property and financial investment management, security, audit, IT and HR. Weybourne Group is based in both the UK and Singapore.

Purpose of the position:

We’re looking for an Education and Outreach Specialist to join the James Dyson Foundation; someone who is motivated to work to inspire the next generation of engineers through hands-on outreach strategies. They will need to equip themselves with the skills to engage and motivate young people and educators across the UK.

The James Dyson Foundation Education and Outreach Specialist will focus on the following areas:

  • Manage and implement the James Dyson Foundation’s presence at key STEM events throughout the year, including sourcing and managing equipment, completing risk assessments and sourcing volunteers.
  • Seek opportunities for the Foundation to share key information about their work and educational resource and workshop offerings with established and training teachers through hands-on sessions.
  • Lead on the continued implementation of the Foundation’s educational resource offerings globally, creating frameworks to track the success of each resource.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to manage the Foundation’s ongoing relationships and support with relevant events or funding opportunities.

Job purpose:

STEM outreach

  • Manage the Foundation’s attendance at STEM events across the Southwest of the UK.
  • Implement the Foundation’s in-school workshops across the Southwest of the UK.
  • Engage Dyson and Weybourne people to volunteer at events and workshops.
  • Manage the Foundation’s educational resources – overseeing the existing resource offering in the UK and working with the global team to deliver global resources.
  • Create frameworks to track the success of the Foundation’s outreach and resources.
  • Identify ways to develop existing resources and opportunities for new resources.
  • Deliver relevant teacher training sessions across the UK
  • Manage relationships with key STEM partners
  • Manage the Foundation’s bursary programmes

Knowledge and interest in engineering education

  • Develop an expansive knowledge of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) education in the UK.
  • Develop a network of contacts in engineering education.

Administrative duties

  • Support with the charity’s administration tasks for the Foundation including writing correspondence and supporting with payments and donations.
  • Manage Payroll giving.
  • Manage all administrative tasks associated with delivering events, workshops and resources for the Foundation, including completing risk assessments.

Requirements

Experience and education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience in an education role (e.g., teaching, work or volunteering for education non-profit organisation).

Skills and competencies:

  • Strong verbal communication skills – ability to present ideas in an engaging and inspiring way.
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Strong organisational and planning skills.
  • Strong time management skills needed to balance multiple projects and administrative duties.
  • Experience managing people or volunteers preferred but not essential
  • An understanding of the education system in the UK.
  • Computer literacy – Outlook, Excel and Word
  • A strong interest in engineering education.
  • A strong interest in the James Dyson Foundation’s mission.
  • Creative, in ideas and writing.
  • Proactive – always looking for ways to improve.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team player.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to a fast-paced, growing organisation.
