Job Title: HOLMES Indexer - Major Incident Room

Salary: The starting salary is £34,808, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £31,880 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £34,108 Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: Barking

Working hours: Monday to Friday, 8-hour shifts between 0800 - 1800 with the potential need to work extended hours/weekends in line with business need and Inquiry deadlines


Role Description

The Major Incident Room (MIR) indexes, records and stores all material generated by the Homicide Enquiry Teams on a system named HOLMES. An investigation is recorded, managed and developed on HOLMES. As an indexer you will be a key member of the team, you will read all documents, messages and statement submitted by the enquiry team. You will assess the material and look for viable lines of enquiry. You will seek to progress the investigation in line with the Senior Investigating Officer’s strategy. You will use the HOLMES system to raise new actions and close redundant lines of enquiry. Experience of the HOLMES system would be beneficial but not essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Indexers are expected to obtain a working knowledge of the investigation(s) they are working on and assess pertinent information within documents, actions and statements which have been submitted into the MIR.
  • Indexers work as part of a team with reader / receivers and the office managers.
  • Indexers are an integral part of the investigation team and will often be called to attend the investigative office meetings.
  • Monitor and maintain relevant queues on the HOLMES (training provided)

Essential Criteria

  • Must be HOLMES v19 Indexer Trained or successfully complete Indexer Training which will be part of the conditional offer of employment in the role
  • Ability to pass the minimum standards of vetting required for the role
  • An understanding of IT particularly Microsoft products (word, outlook etc)

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience working within a MIR team
  • A good knowledge of the HOLMES manual
  • previous experience of working within a Major Incident Room.
  • Effective verbal and written skills with the ability to establish further detail by raising investigative actions.
  • The ability to manage and priorities workloads subject to disclosure / court deadlines
