Purpose of Post
- To provide safe, efficient healthcare to patients by providing services alongside the Medical, Nursing and Administrative teams.
- To provide these services the HCA will be required to participate in all necessary training and updates with assessments of competency as required and follow Wadhurst Medical Groups policies and directives.
- The HCA will only undertake services that are covered by the relevant insurances.
- The HCA will deliver these services in clinics with timely appointments made as required.
- The HCA may deliver some services at the patients home.
- All procedures and actions will be documented as required and any concerns will be escalated to appropriate management.
Job description
- Primary Responsibilities
- To undertake phlebotomy for adults and some children as appropriate to training, experience and competency and send to the laboratory
- To ensure all samples are correctly labelled and placed ready for collection by the courier.
- To perform POC D-Dimer testing as requested.
- To accurately measure Blood pressure with manual or automatic machines.
- To measure temperature, pulse, peripheral oxygen levels, height, weight and BMI.
- To set up, fit monitors and up load 12 hour blood pressure recordings.
- To check and send urine sample to the laboratory as needed and report to GP if abnormality found on a dip test.
- To perform electrocardiography and ensure results are available for GP to review as needed
- To actively ask and record patients smoking, alcohol and activity levels if required
- To chaperone as requested.
- To be supervised in the management of simple wounds.
- To remove sutures and clips.
- To ensure infection control measures are adhered to including correct use of PPE.
- To escalate any clinical concerns to either more senior member of the nursing team, GP, or manager.
- Secondary / Administrative Responsibilities
- To ensure the ordering of equipment when requested and the management of all clinical stock levels, rotation and ordering.
- To collect specimens ready for collection by hospital courier.
- To clean room/equipment to be used, according to cleaning schedule and record.
- To participate in checking toilets for cleanliness and stock.
- To ensure that the management of clinical waste and sharps bins is done safely and correctly.
- To participate in checking emergency equipment daily, and resuscitation bag weekly.
- To perform external and internal quality control testing as required for Coaguchek and Cobas machines ensure results are recorded and submitted.
- To ensure adequate turnaround of CSSD stock.
- To undertake a monthly drug stock take, ensuring that new stock is rotated and expiry dates are checked.
- To participate in checking fridge temperatures daily and weekly USB checks to ensure the cold chain is maintained. To report any cold chain breach immediately.
- To clean vaccine fridges monthly.
- To attend and participate in nurse and practice meetings.
- To ensure that all mandatory training is up to date.
- To escalate any significant events to a manager (good or bad) and complete a significant event form.
- To participate in the vaccination campaigns.
- To support the surgery in the management of Long term conditions.
- To undertake any other duties as specified by the Lead Nurse.
- Other Duties - with Completion of Adequate Training
- To undertake POC INR monitoring using Coaguchek machines and INR star software. To monitor overdue patients and contact them either by letter or phone - external training provided by Roche and internal training against WMG competencies.
- To administer injections (e.g. Influenza, Pneumonia, Vitamin B12) - external training and internal training against WMG competencies.
- To undertake NHS health checks using Point of Care Testing (POCT) machines - external training and internal training against WMG competencies.
- To undertake Doppler measurement - internal training against WMG competencies.
- To complete vulnerable patient reviews and/or home visits - internal training against WMG competencies.
- To undertake ear syringing and ear care - external training and internal training against WMG competencies.
- To prepare and assist the GP in minor surgery and IUD/IUS clinics - internal training against WMG competencies.
- To assist with spirometry - external training and internal training against WMG competencies.

- Flexibility
This job description is intended to provide a broad outline of the role. The postholder may be required to carry out other duties commensurate with their banding and competence, including working with other practices that come under SPC, where this is reasonable.
