Hours of Work: 30 hours minimum (with weekend work)
Contract: 8.30-4.30pm shifts with weekend work
Salary: £12.21ph

Purpose of the Role
To deliver exceptional front-of-house service in the hospice café, creating a warm and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, volunteers, staff, and the wider community. The postholder will serve high-quality food and drink, maintain excellent hygiene standards, and contribute to generating income to support hospice care.
Key ResponsibilitiesCustomer Service
- Provide a friendly and professional welcome to all customers.
- Take orders accurately and serve food and beverages promptly.
- Adapt service to meet the needs of all customers, including patients and families, with sensitivity and empathy.
- Handle queries, complaints, and requests with discretion and care.
Food & Beverage Service
- Prepare and serve hot and cold drinks, light meals, and snacks to agreed standards.
- Operate coffee-making equipment, including espresso machines, following training.
- Present food attractively and ensure portion control is maintained.
- Follow allergen awareness procedures and communicate clearly with customers.
Cash Handling & Sales
- Operate the till and process cash and card transactions accurately.
- Assist with daily cashing-up and reconciliation in line with hospice procedures.
- Promote daily specials, events, and café promotions where appropriate.
Housekeeping & Hygiene
- Keep all front-of-house areas clean, tidy, and well-presented at all times.
- Clear and sanitise tables promptly after use.
- Refill consumables and display items as required.
- Assist with basic washing up and equipment cleaning as needed.
Teamwork & Communication
- Work collaboratively with café, kitchen, and volunteer colleagues.
- Support the induction and guidance of new team members and volunteers.
- Communicate effectively with the Café Manager about stock levels, customer feedback, or operational issues.
Compliance & Safety
- Follow hospice food hygiene, health & safety, and safeguarding policies at all times.
- Wear the required uniform and PPE.
- Report any incidents, hazards, or maintenance needs promptly.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Proven customer service experience in a hospitality, retail, or café environment.
- Ability to work effectively in a busy environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic numeracy and cash handling skills.
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.
- Commitment to hospice values and providing a compassionate, respectful service.
Desirable
- Barista skills and experience operating coffee machines.
- Food Hygiene Level 2 or willingness to obtain it.
- Previous experience in a charity or community setting.
- Knowledge of allergen regulations.
