    Job Description and Person Specification

We have an exciting opportunity for a Permanent, Full Time, Children’s Champion to join Southampton City Council (SCC) in the Child Protection Conference Team.

About the team

The Child Protection Conference Team is a small team of Independent Chairs and supporting staff responsible for chairing initial and review child protection conferences aimed at reducing risk of harm to children and young people in the city.

About the role

The team is looking for an enthusiastic, child centred practitioner to work in the role of Children’s Champion on a permanent basis. Key tasks include:

  • Visiting children and young people over the age of 6 either at home or in school to gain their views prior to both initial and review child protection conferences, and to support them to better understand the child protection conference process.
  • Attending initial and review child protection conferences in order to share children and young people’s views.
  • Supporting children and young people over the age of 10 to participate in initial and review child protection conferences, where appropriate, either virtually or in person

About you:

The successful application will need to be confident at liaising with parents, schools and social workers to seek consent to see the child, and then collaborate with these colleagues to facilitate the child's further participation if they wish. The candidate will need to produce a clear and concise report for the conference, sharing the views of the child in their own words as much as possible. The Champion keeps a record of children offered and that receive a service, contributing to overall service development of the role.

Candidates will benefit from being computer literature and have excellent skills at engaging with children and young people from 7 to 17. An understanding of child protection and contextual safeguarding is beneficial.

Salary: The salary band for this role is £32,061 - £36,362. The starting salary is £32,061 with annual progression through the salary bands.
