Cardiology Interventional Fellow

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust
£65,048 - £73,992 a year
Somerset, England
Full time

The closing date is 30th Jul 2025

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team of highly motivated professionals, in a progressive department, providing high quality cardiology services to the people of Somerset.

This one-year fellowship provides advanced interventional cardiology training within a highly developed and well-equipped department serving a population of over 550,000 in Somerset. The post focuses on building proficiency in complex percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), including CTO procedures and adjunctive imaging (IVUS, OCT), with an expectation of over 400 first-operator PCIs during the fellowship.

The fellow will work in a state-of-the-art environment featuring three Siemens catheter labs, participating in both elective and acute PCI sessions. The role includes limited ward and outpatient responsibilities, contributing to national audits (e.g., MINAP, BCIS), and supporting junior staff. There is also opportunity for involvement in teaching, research, and clinical governance.

The post includes a 1-in-6 on-call rota for 24/7 Primary PCI (PPCI). The fellow will have access to a structured job plan, dedicated supervision, and be expected to comply with mandatory training and infection control standards.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain substantial experience in a high-volume PCI centre with access to modern technologies, while also benefiting from the quality of life offered by living in the scenic Southwest of England.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

As an Interventional Cardiology Fellow (ST3+), you will play a key role in delivering high-quality care within a modern, well-equipped cardiology department. Your main responsibilities will include:

Clinical Duties

Participate in seven weekly interventional cardiology sessions, encompassing both acute and elective PCI cases, including complex interventions such as chronic total occlusions (CTOs).

Perform outpatient cardiology clinics, typically one per week.

Support junior colleagues and assist with inpatient cardiology referrals, with minimal ward-based responsibilities.

Training and Development

Gain hands-on experience with over 400 first-operator PCI procedures during the 12-month fellowship.

Develop advanced skills in interventional techniques, including IVUS, OCT, and basic CTO strategies.

Attend and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and the weekly Grand Round.

Education and Supervision

Support the education and training of junior doctors and medical students within the department.

Engage in departmental teaching sessions and clinical discussions.

Audit and Clinical Governance

Actively participate in clinical audits, including national audits such as BCIS and MINAP.

Uphold clinical governance standards and adhere to infection control protocols and Trust-wide safety policies.
