The size and complexity of Shell Trading & Supply (T&S) has increased substantially over the past few years and the expectations around efficient and effective processes and controls have also shifted for T&S. We are continuing to strengthen the risk management capabilities of the organisation from a people, process, data and systems perspective in both the first and second lines.
The Commercial Operations organization within T&S operates in 9 trading hubs, 4 key SBO locations, with over 1500 people. It is designed to improve T&S cross business execution including both ‘run the business capabilities’ e.g., trading operations support and ‘change the business capabilities’. This is achieved through enhanced business activities across key activities such controls and processes.
T&S Integrated Process Risk and Controls team (IPRC) supports, protects, and enables the business by driving synergies and positive change via standardization and improvement of process, control and assurance activities, whilst aligning with the overarching T&S priorities and delivering a commercial approach to operating controls and implementation of second line activities across commercial lines of business.
What’s the role?
Credibly advising and partnering with LoB senior leadership teams to evolve and execute a commercial Business Resilience framework, linked to Group strategy, with a specific focus on integrating cyber security considerations into business continuity and resilience planning
Engage and influence senior management to prioritise the importance of business resilience and secure support for initiatives, incorporating cyber security
Manage senior leadership expectations and responsibilities around the business resilience framework, driving commercial pragmatic solutions to business resilience problems
Lead the design and implementation as part of the framework, for measuring and reporting on business resilience maturity across T&S, incorporating cyber. This includes regular reporting to senior management on progress, challenges, and opportunities
Lead and oversee the development, maintenance, and regular review of BCPs, including minimum viable company (MVC) materials and playbooks, and across T&S, ensuring they are fit for purpose, aligned with the overall business resilience framework, and incorporate robust cyber security recovery strategies
Direct the planning and execution of BCP testing—including simulations and cyber-focused exercises—to validate readiness and response capability
Lead a high-performing team, balancing business demand and risk through capacity planning, automation, and capability development to future-proof the function, leveraging AI to solution current and future operational bottlenecks
Monitor external market trends, regulatory developments, and industry process and control benchmarks to proactively improve internal process and control practices. Synthesize insights into commercial and pragmatic T&S solutions
What do we need from you?
Must have demonstrable deep experience of having worked at a large complex peer institution (Oil & Gas Major, Independent Commodity Trader, Investment Manager / Bank) in a similar role
Ideally experience of physical and financial commodity trading and/or having worked in a regulated trading business
Deep understanding and technical knowledge and experience in managing and responding to major business disruptions, including crisis communication, stakeholder management, and post-incident analysis
Leading and implementing comprehensive business continuity and resilience programs across large and complex organizations
Understanding of relevant regulatory requirements and standards related to business continuity and resilience (e.g., ISO 22301, industry-specific regulations). Ability to ensure compliance and adapt strategies to meet evolving regulatory demands
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including senior leadership. This includes experience in building consensus and managing expectations

Special Challenges/Additional Comments (High Degree of Complexity)
The T&S business environment is very dynamic, with a highly complex regulatory and internal system landscape. The team is located globally, with multiple interfaces to our Trading hubs in London, Rotterdam, Houston. and Singapore and will therefore require strong communication, influencing skills and virtual management of interfaces.

In addition, mastery of operational excellence is required to drive the right solutions in the most economical way.

A good understanding of complex systems, data, and processes is required, combined with a broad range (and potentially conflicting) internal stakeholder interest
Support the development of new tools as part of the digitalization agenda to capture the complexity, simplify ways of working and improve decision making
