Vessel Fire & Safety Officer – Barrow-in-Furness
No experience required – full training provided
We are seeking Vessel Fire & Safety Officers to join our team in Barrow-in-Furness. This is a shift-based role, 365 days a year, where you will play a critical part in ensuring the safety of personnel and assets in challenging environments.
About the Role
As a Vessel Fire & Safety Officer, you will be responsible for the safety of personnel and assets, which requires you to access, work, and egress in confined spaces. You will need to maintain a high level of personal fitness to carry out the duties of the role and be prepared to work in demanding environments including:
- Confined spaces
- Working at heights
- Low light/dark conditions
- Hazardous and outdoor environments
- Working within various facilities across the BAE Systems Barrow site
While no medical exam is required, you must be comfortable with these physical requirements and able to meet the demands of the role.
Shifts Available

Day Shift: £14.10 per hour
- Rotating 4-day shift covering Sunday – Friday, 06:30am – 5.00pm (bench shift)
- 3 on / 4 off, 6:30am – 7:30pm, with training on Saturday every month (core day shift)

Night Shift: £14.77 per hour
- Monday – Thursday, 8:00pm – 6:30am (core night shift)

Key Responsibilities

Fire Safety & Hot Work Compliance ✅
Ensure all hot work is carried out in line with Hot Work Permit requirements. -
Fire Safety Inspections
Check for fire hazards such as gas locations, flammable substances, and storage issues. -
Area Inspections
Inspect all spaces, including behind bulkheads and adjacent compartments, prior to hot work. -
Fire Safety Signage ️
Ensure correct signage is displayed, visible, and adhered to. -
Fire-Fighting Equipment ️
Be familiar with all hand-portable and external fire-fighting equipment and ensure serviceability. -
Liaising with Trades ️
Work closely with other trades, remain aware of flushing/testing systems, and halt unsafe operations. -
Other Duties
Carry out any additional responsibilities directed by the Fire Manager/Supervisor.

Qualifications
Requirements
- Must be fit and able to work in physically demanding conditions (heat, confined spaces, heights).
- Must be a British citizen or have held a British passport for at least 5 years.
- Able to obtain Security Clearance (SC)
- 5-year checkable work history, with all employment gaps over 2 weeks explained.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces, darkness, at heights, and wearing breathing apparatus.
- Willing to work across various facilities on the Barrow site
- No prior experience needed – full training provided
