About the Organisation:
National Services Scotland (NSS) is a national NHS Board operating right at the heart of NHSScotland providing invaluable support and advice at a strategic and operational level. NSS supports customers to deliver their services more efficiently and effectively and we offer shared services on a national scale using best-in-class systems and standards. Our priority is always the same – to improve the health and well-being of the people of Scotland. We do this by working in partnership with colleagues across Health and Social Care to deliver fit for purpose solutions and systems, delivering high quality services that help our stakeholders to free up resources so they can be re-invested into essential services.

The Post:
As a major division within NHS National Services Scotland, the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) plays a vital role not only in the health of the people of Scotland but also on an international scale through our leading position in new product development, biomedical research, and donor services. Our goal is to maintain the highest standards of patient care whilst remaining competitive internationally.

Tissue, Cells & Advanced Therapeutics is an integral part of the SNBTS with responsibility for the collection, testing, storing and issuing of bone, human tissues and cells throughout Scotland. TCAT is licensed by both the Human Tissue Authority and Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency for the manufacture of tissue, cells and advanced therapeutics for both routine clinical use and use in first in man/Phase I/II clinical trials.

We are seeking to appoint two Band 6 Nurses as Tissue & Bone Donor Coordinators to work full-time within a team of Tissue and Bone Donor Coordinators. These posts will be based at SNBTS sites in Edinburgh or Glasgow and will involve working across hospitals and hospices within the Central Region. The role requires the selected individual to optimise the opportunity of donation potential in Scotland.

The principal purpose of these roles is to contribute to expanding our eye donation programme across Scotland in both hospitals and hospices. The post holder will also obtain consent/authorisation for donation with donors and families and organise tissue retrieval. The role involves networking with HCP’s and providing training and advice to clinical colleagues in clinics, hospital emergency department, ICU and palliative care settings. This may involve regular travel for face-to-face training.

We collaborate with Specialist Nurses in Organ Donation across Scotland to increase donation opportunities for patients and families. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the day-to-day operation and functioning of the service supporting bone and deceased tissue donors in hospitals across the Central Belt.

The Candidate:
The successful candidate will be a team player who can also work autonomously with excellent communication skills since liaison with a wide range of clinical colleagues and members of the public are a pre-requisite of the work. A significant proportion of the workload is office based / undertaken remotely utilising electronic records, data base management which requires good documentation practice and rigorous attention to detail to meet regulatory compliance. The ability to demonstrate initiative and a flexible approach to the workload is essential. The candidate would be required to attend multiple sites to engage with key Stakeholders.

Tissue, Cells & Advanced Therapeutics provides a 24-hour service and an out of hour’s on-call service is in operation. The person appointed will be required to participate in the on-call Rota for referral of potential tissue donors. Appropriate training and support will be given in all aspects of the service operations with an expectation of participation as required.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who have lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.

Candidates must have current NMC registration at the time of applying.
