About the job

Job summary

The Electoral Commission is the UK’s independent body overseeing elections and regulating political finance. Everything we do is about ensuring trust, participation, and integrity in the democratic process.

As we enter a bold new chapter under our five-year Corporate Plan, we are increasing our workforce and transforming how we plan and deliver core services. This post plays a central role in that journey.

We are recruiting for a Senior Press Officer who will support the delivery of the Commission’s strategic communication and media work.

Job description

You will:

  • Develop press plans and material to support the Commission’s key objectives, including voter engagement, policy reform and transparency in the political finance regime
  • Play a crucial role in the busy press office function, responding to queries from national, regional and trade journalists
  • Provide strategic press advice to senior colleagues and the wider organisation, and briefing spokespeople ahead of media interviews and giving feedback
  • Develop messaging that gets across the Commission’s views and voter information in a clear, concise and engaging way

The press sub-team sits within the wider External Communications team, alongside public affairs and customer service. Together the team is responsible for protecting and promoting the Commission’s reputation with external stakeholders.

The External Communications team works with colleagues across the Commission to communicate the organisation's insights and expertise.

Person specification

We are looking for an experienced Press Officer with either in-house or agency experience, who has managed complex communications projects, acted as an advisor to senior colleagues, provided strategic advice, and recommended solutions to problems.

You will be able to communicate clearly and succinctly across diverse audiences, both verbally and in written form. This will be coupled with a proven capacity to research, analyse, and summarise complex information effectively. You will also have a strong understanding of the UK media landscape and the current political environment.

Benefits

Alongside your salary of £40,031, The Electoral Commission contributes £11,596 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.

We offer a strong total reward package, including:

    • Flexible working and hybrid model (40% office minimum)
    • 28 rising to 30 days annual leave + bank holidays
    • Civil Service pension scheme (28.97% employer contribution)
    • £312 working from home allowance (tax-free)
    • Ongoing learning and development opportunities
    • Ride2Work, eye care vouchers and more

An anonymised supporting statement, clearly outlining how you meet the essential criteria listed in the job description.
