Housing First

A successful and evidence-based approach to homelessness, Housing First is a model that provides people with housing ‘first’ – a stable home from which to start rebuilding a life. The only requirement is a commitment to a tenancy. Utilizing this approach, and partnered with the Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust, a specific housing pathway has developed catering to those individuals with long-term mental health conditions.

Many individuals who experience long-term mental health conditions often find their lives further impacted by periods of homelessness and substance/alcohol misuse problems. Temporary and shared accommodation isn’t always suited to these needs, which is why our charity is further developing these community-based housing pathways.

About the Role

To work in conjunction with the Housing First manager and wider team to develop five supported mental health tenancies through self-contained, community based social housing in West Sussex. The Mental Health Housing Worker will work specifically to provide wrap-around, intensive housing management and be the interface between the Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust’s (SPFT) clinical and other support staff required for an individual to maintain their tenancy. This service will take referrals from the Mental Health Rehab team, who will provide the clinical support alongside SPFT’s SAM team. Working closely with statutory and voluntary agencies, the Mental Health Housing Worker will ensure that the scheme’s clients have access to appropriate support to assist with tenancy sustainment within their relevant local community.

About You

To join us as our Mental Health Housing Worker, in addition to having experience in supporting vulnerable people, you will need to have:

  • Experience of working in housing or homelessness, mental health, substance misuse, offending or other related fields
  • Clear understanding of the impact of complex trauma and multiple disadvantages and its relationship to substance use and homelessness
  • Good working knowledge of financial inclusion, welfare rights and benefits, including making claims and maximising income
  • An understanding of strengths-based, person-centred support within a harm minimisation approach
  • Confidence to be assertive while displaying patience, empathy and a person-centred approach
