We are looking for a proactive, capable Livestock Procurement Assistant to join our lamb and mutton abattoir. This is a busy, hands-on role that involves supporting the livestock procurement team, liaising with buyers and hauliers and co-ordinating logistics and transport.
You will play a key part in ensuring animal welfare standards are upheld, livestock operations are run efficiently, and the livestock supply flows smoothly into production.
About the Role
Based on-site, you will be an integral member of the livestock procurement team, responsible for:
- Co-ordinating livestock transport logistics, from farms and markets to the abattoir
- Building relationships with suppliers and farmers across the UK to maintain a consistent and efficient supply of livestock, offering feedback and support when required
- Working closely with our lairage team and buyers to help co-ordinate and forecast
purchasing and production quantities
- Booking and planning for the intake, movement, and grading of sheep, ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations
- Accurate record-keeping and clear communication with procurement, suppliers, lairage, production, quality assurance, vets and hauliers.
As the Livestock Procurement Assistant, you will work directly with the buyers but also very closely with the lairage and production teams. Over time, you will also get involved with the pricing and valuing of livestock, while monitoring market trends.
What We’re Looking For;
The ideal candidate will have sheep industry experience or have worked with livestock — whether in a lairage, market, farm or similar setting and a strong understanding of current animal welfare legislation.
You will have strong organisational skills with an eye for detail, be confident under pressure, with good decision-making skills and the ability to think ahead and see the bigger picture.
A sense of responsibility, and clear communication skills are essential, along with a proactive, common-sense approach to problem-solving. Basic IT and record-keeping abilities are required.
Additional Skills & Experience (Desirable, Not Essential)
- We welcome candidates with relevant animal welfare training or certification — though training can be provided.
- Experience in the abattoir or meat sector is a plus, as is a telehandler licence.
