About the Role

We invite applications for a Lecturer in Korean Digital Media, with a focus on contemporary digital culture and media practices in South Korea. There is possibility of the post extending for another 3 years.

The successful candidate will have a strong research profile in Korean digital media and the ability to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across programmes taught in School of Arts as well as Korean Studies programmes.

The postholder will play a key role in developing interdisciplinary teaching and research that bridges Korean cultural studies, digital media, and global creative industries.

We are looking for a scholar with a promising publication record and an active research agenda, as well as demonstrated excellence in innovative forms of teaching at undergraduate, and postgraduate level. The post holder will be expected to contribute to and shape the Department’s research profile as well as enhance the delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. In particular, the post holder will play a key role in expanding SOAS’s teaching and research on Korea thus supporting SOAS’s strategic aim to maintain its position as the leading centre for Korean Studies in the UK.
The role holder will be a dynamic, creative and collegial individual with specialist knowledge of Korean Digital Media, appropriate academic and teaching experience and proven skills in administration. Research-based expertise in Korean digital media and proficiency in the Korean language are essential requirements for this role. The appointee will bring to the role an arts industries network as well as experience in enriching the non-degree and co-curricular student experience.

Apart from the publication of outstanding academic research, the role holder will convene and teach both general and specialist modules (individually and with others), advise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, and provide pastoral care for students. In particular, the role holder will be expected to contribute to the newly launched BA Digital Media and Culture programme. In addition, the role holder may also teach compulsory, elective and/or team-taught modules on one or more of the following programmes offered by the School of Arts: BA Creative Arts, BA Korean, MA History of Art and Archaeology of East Asia, MA Creative and Cultural Industries, MA Korean Studies. The role holder will also be expected to work in a collegial and collaborative manner with both academic and non-academic staff across the Department and the School.

It would be desirable for the role holder to be a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy but, if not, SOAS will support them in applying to the HEA.

The School of Arts is home to the Department of History of Art and Archaeology, the Department of Music and the Centre for Creative Industries, Media and Screen Studies. We are a world-leading centre for the teaching and research of visual and material arts, music and sound studies, curating, media industries and digital cultures of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and their global diasporas. School of Arts academics are globally recognised specialists in their fields and our research expertise is unsurpassed in breadth and reach by any other institution worldwide. School of Arts academics lead interdisciplinary research projects, often in collaboration with museums, artists and other stakeholders from Asian, Africa and the Middle East. Among other projects, we explore parallels between artistic and musical aesthetics and the translatability of theoretical approaches developed in media studies. We also spearhead digital initiatives, capitalising on the interdisciplinary environment of the School of Arts, where art historians and musicians work alongside colleagues in musicology, film and screen studies and creative and cultural industries.
