To support the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality patient care within the GP practice. The HCA will work under the supervision of the nursing and clinical team, providing clinical and administrative support to ensure efficient running of the practice.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties (within competence and under supervision)
- Undertake patient observations (e.g., blood pressure, pulse)
- Perform venepuncture (blood taking) as trained.
- Carry out ECG recordings.
- Conduct urinalysis and other simple diagnostic tests.
- Support chronic disease management by carrying out reviews (e.g., blood pressure checks, weight monitoring).
- Conduct NHS Health Checks and lifestyle assessments (diet, smoking, alcohol, exercise).
- Administer vaccinations (e.g., flu) and B12 injections if trained and competent.
- Take height, weight, BMI, and waist circumference measurements.
- Support patients in managing long-term conditions through health promotion and advice.
- Chaperone patients during examinations and procedures.
- Carry out infection control and cleaning of clinical areas, equipment, and instruments.
Administrative Duties
- Accurately record clinical data on the patient’s medical record (EMIS Web).
- Ensure proper documentation of test results and procedures.
- Manage stock levels of clinical supplies and equipment.
- Support recall systems for chronic disease reviews and health checks.
- Liaise with other healthcare professionals as required.
