The role
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Business Director to lead the operational and commercial aspects of UET. Reporting directly to the CEO, the post holder will work closely with the Head of Service Delivery to shape and deliver the organisation’s long-term strategy, ensuring financial sustainability, operational excellence, and organisational growth. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for business planning, resource management, and compliance across UET’s services and sites.
Responsibilities
Strategic & Financial Leadership
- Develop and implement business strategies that align with UET’s mission and goals.
- Set and monitor performance metrics, driving continuous improvement and informed decision-making.
- Lead annual budgeting processes and ensure sound financial management, including monthly management accounts, cash flow, and forecasting.
Operations & Compliance
- Ensure UET’s compliance with legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations.
- Oversee payroll preparation and work with external accountants to ensure legislative compliance.
- Maintain effective financial controls and accurate, timely reporting.
- Oversee IT infrastructure, GDPR compliance/training, and information governance.
Human Resources (with external HR consultant)
- Ensure all staff have appropriate contracts and variations in place.
- Manage recruitment processes end-to-end, from advertising to appointment.
- Partner with HR consultants to manage issues up to grievance and disciplinary levels.
- Develop policies that reflect legal requirements and sector best practice.
- Champion staff wellbeing, engagement, and professional development.
Facilities, Health & Safety
- Maintain and update the asset register and PPM schedule.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety standards and manage service contracts.
- Work with external consultants and internal stakeholders to audit and improve workplace safety and facilities.
Stakeholder & Team Leadership
- Lead and inspire cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and accountability.
- Build strong relationships with suppliers, funders, and stakeholders.
- Provide regular performance updates to the CEO and Board of Trustees.
Essential skills & requirements
Person Specification
Essential
- Proven senior leadership experience, ideally in a Business Director or equivalent role.
- Strong understanding of strategic planning, financial management, and project delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional teams and complex operations.
- Strong IT and reporting skills.
- Experience with financial systems (e.g., Xero) and service contract management.
- Strong knowledge of HR practices, employment law, and GDPR compliance.
- Ability to work at both senior and operational levels.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Enhanced DBS disclosure
Desirable
- Experience in the charity or education sector.
- Facilities and health & safety management experience.
- Familiarity with SEND and experience working with young people with additional needs.
- Experience preparing and submitting funding or grant applications.
