Our client, a company within the engineering industry, is seeking a Finance Controller to take ownership of financial activities and provide support to wider business operations. This position involves managing company finances, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and maintaining oversight of day to day administrative functions.
The successful applicant will have strong financial knowledge, be confident using accounting software such as Sage 50, and be comfortable working independently in a busy and technically focused environment.
Main Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Manage all accounting systems including general ledger, payroll and project costing
- Process all incoming and outgoing financial transactions accurately and on time
- Administer payments to suppliers, subcontractors and employees using bank transfer systems
- Carry out daily reconciliation of bank accounts and corporate expenditure
- Run payroll for both monthly salaried staff and weekly paid employees
- Ensure compliance with HMRC including tax, national insurance and VAT returns
- Monitor and manage cash flow to support ongoing operations and future planning
- Work alongside external accountants to prepare quarterly reports and management accounts
- Raise purchase orders for large scale procurement using Sage
- Assist with collection of overdue payments and ongoing credit control
Operational and Administrative Support
- Maintain records for company vehicles, scheduling MOTs, servicing and repairs where required
- Keep training records up to date, arrange renewals and book training courses when necessary
- Track equipment calibration dates and inform relevant staff when action is needed
- Carry out monthly checks of protective clothing and arrange replacements when required
- Work with health and safety consultants to gather information needed for audits and inspections
- Maintain accurate contract records and ensure all project documents are filed correctly
- Handle office based tasks such as answering calls, managing deliveries and supporting visitors
Required Experience and Skills
- Experience in a similar finance or office management position, preferably within a technical or project driven environment
- Confident using accounting software such as Sage 50 or similar platforms
- Strong understanding of UK financial regulations including payroll and VAT
- Excellent organisation skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision
- Good communication skills with the ability to work with both office based staff and site teams
- A practical and proactive approach to problem solving and task management
