If you like the idea of an active, outdoor job and working with animals, this could be the perfect career opportunity for you. We have a position available to join a team of four people on one of our outdoor pig breeding herds. We are looking for the type of person who will put the animals' needs first and take the time to do the job properly. When you work with livestock the approach needs to be 'finish the job off today' not 'tomorrow will do'.
The role will predominantly be working with the pregnant sows (mums). This would involve daily tasks around caring for the pigs (feeding, strawing, vaccinating, tractor driving and so much more). We believe in keeping happy, healthy pigs so the people who work for us must have a fondness for animals and whilst experience working on a pig farm is helpful we are more interested in the right type of person who we can develop.
This job is the complete opposite to an office job, plenty of fresh air, lots of movement and very little time on your hands for clock watching. On average you will be working around 45 hours every week, which will include some hours at the weekend and on Bank Holidays (the pigs still need feeding on Christmas Day).
Working Hours are typically from 7:00am until 4:00pm, with an hour unpaid break, during the week. However, on a Thursday morning we have an early start (around 3:00am) but we also finish early that day. It is also required to work every other weekend (typically around 4 hours both days).
Blythburgh Pigs is a family run free range pig farm based on the North East Suffolk coast. We farm two 900 sow outdoor breeding herds and finish pigs in our own unique free range system all the way to slaughter. The business has over 40 years’ experience farming pigs, spanning two generations, and our continued investment in genetics has led to our pork being sort after by some of the very best butchers and chefs in the UK. Working outside comes with plenty of pros and cons, some sunshine in the Summer but rain and mud in the Winter, lots of exercise and plenty of fresh air. It's not for everyone but neither is sitting behind a desk.
We are a second generation family run business that can offer the right person a long term, secure and fulfilling job. For more information about us you can visit our website at www.freerangepork.co.uk
With an application please take the time to add a cover note detailing why you think you would be good for this role as a CV alone might not give us enough key information to be considered for interview (also it nice to know that you have read this far in the job description).
