Doncaster Deaf Trust are seeking to appoint a Family Sign Language Mentor to join our Deaf Education Centre and further develop our reputation as a national centre of excellence in deaf education.

Our BSL strategy is aiming to restructure the BSL department within Doncaster Deaf Trust to increase both the training offer to staff and to provide BSL programmes to staff, families, employers and the general public. It is fundamental to the strategy to promote BSL across the Trust and within the community at a local, regional and national level.

The Role

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • To plan and deliver effective Family Sign Language sessions for families and carers of D/deaf children and learners who are in our school and college.
  • To produce quality learning/signing skills/sign activities.
  • To work flexibly with School, College and the Speech Therapy team.
  • Working with families and carers to provide blocks of family sign language and BSL, with a blended approach of remote and face to face delivery, which may require evening or weekend work.
  • To develop signing skills for family members and carers and assess their progression.
  • To demonstrate care and sensitivity toward children, families and carers.
  • To observe and liaise with school and college to recognise where FSL needs are a priority and if other input is required.
  • To attend annual reviews with families as requested.
  • To participate in various events e.g. BDA, NDCS etc. and local community as required.

Essential Criteria

  • British Sign Language Skills
  • Ability to use BSL at Level 3/4 or equivalent
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm, sensitivity and a caring attitude whilst working with children, families and carers
  • Provide a role model for families and carers through personal and professional conduct
  • The ability to inspire and motivate families, carers and guardians to high levels of progress
  • Ability to promote good relationships with clients
  • To be able to demonstrate experience of strong organisational skills
  • Experience and a commitment to Safeguarding best practice
  • Experience of setting, monitoring and achieving targets to improve outcomes for learners
