Job Title: Night Assessment/Waking Night Staff
(Entry Level – Minimal/Some Relevant Experiences Desired)
Location: The Groves Family Assessment Centre (Centres in Sutton and Croydon)
Hours: 40 hours/week shift across 5 days on a 7-day Rota (including 2 weekends per month)
Salary: £25,272 to £30,784
Job Purpose
The Family Assessment Night Assessor plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of children within the Family Assessment Centre. This position involves closely monitoring families during night shifts, supporting parents, and documenting interactions to assess parental capabilities and child welfare.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintaining observations of families in placement throughout the night to ensure the safety and well-being of the children.
- Identifying and responding to any safeguarding concerns, recording and passing them on to the relevant manager.
- Keeping clear, detailed, and accurate electronic recordings.
- Being a positive role model.
- Advising, supporting, and teaching parents as necessary.
Child Safeguarding:
- Remain awake and vigilant throughout the entire night shift.
- Oversee the safeguarding of children by observing all activities involving the child.
- Ensure the emotional and physical needs of the children are consistently met by their parents.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of interactions and events on the daily sheet.
- Provide clear and objective documentation of child and family dynamics for assessment purposes.
Support to Families:
- Offer assistance to families in line with established ways of working.
- Promote a nurturing and supportive environment for parents and children.
Childcare Standards:
- Ensure and promote high standards of childcare and household management within the centre.
Parental Assessment:
- Assess parent-child interactions to evaluate parental ability and responsiveness.
- Contribute to the overall assessment process by identifying strengths and areas of concern within the family unit.

- Resilient and dependable, particularly during overnight hours.
Shift Pattern:
Night Assessors typically follow a rotating schedule of 3 nights on, 4 nights off one week, then 4 nights on, 3 nights off the following week. This pattern includes weekends.
Typical Shifts Include:
- 9:30 pm to 8:30 am
- 9:00 pm to 8:30 am
