Job Description
What will you be doing?
Alten Ltd is seeking a Electronics Digital Engineer, you will join our Edinburgh team to support our activities within the UK Defence sector. You will work on cutting-edge sensor and communication systems embedded in mission-critical platforms, applying your electronic design expertise in a complex, regulated environment. From high-speed digital design to low-noise analogue circuits, this is a career-defining opportunity to contribute to next-generation defence systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop digital and analogue electronic circuits for aerospace and defence applications
- Produce detailed schematics, PCB layouts, and supporting technical documentation using professional tools
- Support prototyping, verification and validation testing, and troubleshoot at both board and system level
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across hardware, software and systems to support integration and delivery
- Participate in design reviews, ensuring adherence to safety, reliability, EMC and regulatory standards
- Liaise with project teams to support design-for-manufacture and ensure smooth transition to production
Qualifications
Experience, skills and qualifications required:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related engineering discipline OR a relevant technical military background with equivalent hands-on engineering experience
- Must be eligible for UK SC Security Clearance (Minimum 5 Years in the UK)
- 5+ years of experience in electronics hardware design, preferably within defence or aerospace sectors
- Strong proficiency with PCB development tools, preferably Siemens EDA (formerly Mentor Graphics)
- Extensive knowledge or specialism in one or more of the following:
- High-speed digital circuit design, including LVDS, JESD204, or Ethernet communication
- FPGA and processor circuit design, including use of DDR memory and associated support circuits
- Low-noise analogue design, including ADC/DAC and signal conditioning
- Power supply design, especially low power, compact, low noise supplies
- Experience in circuit simulation, signal and power integrity analysis, and DFx (Design for Cost, Test, Manufacturability)
- Background in system-level integration, debugging, and test strategy development
- Knowledge of Matlab/Simulink is beneficial
- Experience developing solutions with attention to quality, reliability, safety and testability
