At Balfour Beatty, our work impacts millions — and it will matter to you too. We’re currently looking for a dedicated Driver/Operator to join our Rail UK team at the Hither Green Depot, where you’ll play a vital role in delivering complex, varied, and meaningful rail infrastructure work.

Role Purpose

As an Driver/Operator, you will:

  • Safely drive and operate Tramms & Cranes with professionalism and full compliance.
  • Carry out basic maintenance, fault finding, and minor repairs.

What you'll be doing


Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Track Geometry Services Team to deliver a safe and high-quality service to our customer.
  • Follow planned schedules consistently and reliably.
  • Complete training to maintain and enhance competency levels, including safety-critical operations.
  • Report safety concerns or operational issues to the Regional Operations Manager and engineering team.
  • Adhere to all Safe Systems of Work and company policies, including Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental standards.
  • Be flexible to work unsociable hours (nights, weekends, bank holidays, Christmas and New Year) and lodge away from home when required.
  • Adapt to changing workloads and customer demands with a proactive and positive approach.

Who we're looking for


The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Experience of the operation of on track plant, or an ability and willingness to learn
  • Able to carry out minor maintenance and repairs;
  • Be able to make a positive contribution to a dedicated team working on high profile contracts;
  • A flexible approach to work, being prepared to work around a roster that includes night, weekends, bank holidays and respond to short notice changes of plan;
  • An appreciation of the importance of good customer relations;
  • Able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;
  • Hold a current UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points.
