Services developments unique to QEHB site include: Development of a Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (FSDEC) and Frailty Speciality take providing early comprehensive geriatric assessment and expertise to the local population, coupled with greater community integration including expansion of the frailty virtual ward and increased involvement in our local care home population. Further expansion of the POPS service providing specialist input into emergency general surgical and silver major trauma patients. An additional role will be establishing a geriatrician in the recently formed multi-disciplinary Extended Post-operative Care Units (EPOC), expansion of the peri-operative service to additional tertiary surgical specialities (e.g., thoracic surgery and neurosurgery) and instituting peri-operative links with other local units, for example the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) NHS Foundation Trust. Further development of onco-geriatrics with geriatrician presence in the cancer multi-disciplinary meetings helping to identify higher risk patients who would benefit from pre-operative assessment and enhanced post-operative care.
Increasing development of academic geriatric medicine with links to the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham. QEHB host regular NIHR academic clinical fellows and lecturers, with an increasing portfolio of investigator led studies, focused on the biological mechanisms of ageing, multi-morbidity, and sarcopenia. Expansion of the complex regional Parkinsons disease clinic with links to the neurosciences and neurosurgical departments for interventions such as Deep Brain Stimulation. Support to inpatients at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Norman Power Centre providing specialist geriatric rehabilitative expertise to the citys population.
Opportunities at West Heath and Mosely Hall Hospitals include stroke and trauma rehabilitation whilst the focus at Norman Power Unit is enablement is a more appropriate care setting.
