The Charity
Community Action Malvern and District aims to prevent older and disabled people becoming isolated and lonely. A team of volunteers and paid staff provide a range of services to meet local needs, including transport services (volunteer cars, wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) and minibuses) and a Men’s Shed, with a Volunteer Centre to support local voluntary groups.
The Role
The community transport is a valuable asset for local residents and community groups in Malvern and its surrounding areas. The purpose of this role is to support our transport team in the services we provide across the organisation.
The Objectives
Day-to-day responsibility for vehicle maintenance, keeping the vehicles well maintained and compliant with legal and contractual requirements. ensure vehicles are ready for operation, maintained to a high standard, arranging and overseeing all repairs and servicing, providing information for record keeping and coordinating the response to accidents and breakdowns.
Provide in-house assessment and training for volunteer drivers.
Specific Tasks/Responsibilities include:
· Undertake and record monthly checks, defect reporting and minor maintenance of vehicles, operation of tail lifts, replenishment of fuel, oils and water, and tyre pressure checks etc.
· Regular cleaning of the vehicles
· Ensure compliance to scheduled safety inspections, servicing and MOT of vehicles, including delivery and collect vehicles from garage services.
· Ensure wheelchairs, fixing mechanisms, seat belts and other equipment are safe for use and prepare minibuses in advance for wheelchair configurations
· Provide driving assessment and vehicle familiarisation training for volunteer drivers
· Regular collection of paperwork from driver drop off point
Expectations are that the candidate should have the following skills/experience:
Driving, Technical and safety:
· Full clean driving licence including a D1 category
· Good driving skills with the ability to train and assess driving capability of volunteers and staff
· Good knowledge of vehicle and general maintenance.
· Understanding and ability to apply Health and Safety procedures relevant to the job including manual handling and the safe use of machinery and/or equipment.
Communication and empathy:
· Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with staff, passengers and volunteers
· Good literacy and numeracy skills including the use of digital communications, e.g., telephone, email, WhatsApp etc..
· Awareness of the organisation’s charitable aims and values, recognising the need to act as a representative for the charity at all times
· Responsive to the needs of others, encouraging and influencing as appropriate.
Self-Motivated
· Ability to recognise and to deal with emergency situations
· Ability to work with minimum supervision with good organisational and time management skills
· Adaptable to challenges and changing priorities to ensure maximum vehicle availability
· Willingness to learn and develop and prepared to undertake further training
Employment conditions
· A DBS Check is required for all CAMD staff
· Holiday entitlement is 23 days excluding bank holidays, rising to 28 days after 5 years
· Training and PPE will be provided
