At Quizlet, our mission is to help every learner achieve their outcomes in the most effective and delightful way. We’re a $1B+ learning platform used by two-thirds of U.S. high school students and half of college students, powering over 1 billion learning interactions each week.
We blend cognitive science with machine learning to personalize and enhance the learning experience for students, professionals, and lifelong learners alike. We’re energized by the potential to power more learners through multiple approaches and various tools.
Let’s Build the Future of LearningJoin us to design and deliver AI-powered learning tools that scale across the world and unlock human potential.
About the Team:
Quizlet is right in the middle of transforming our tech stack from thick, “smart” clients to a world of thin, server-driven clients that are powered by our AI systems. To achieve consistent patterns and move quickly, we are building a Client Platform team focused on solving tech problems that are shared between our Mobile and Web clients (and potentially others in the future).
As the technical leader for this team, you will be a founding member and share in setting the charter and vision for this team. Some things that might fall into your remit include the following: uplevel our client analytics logging and feature flagging systems, standardizing (and building the systems to support) deep linking to experiences and content across our platforms and services, and building mechanisms and tooling that will allow us to test our experiences end-to-end and across platforms and marketplaces.
About the Role:
As a new team without a firmly defined charter, you will have a big say in what the day-to-day of this position looks like. That said, this role will be expected to partner closely with leads across our Mobile, Web, Backend, and Platform teams as well as Product and Engineering leadership.
On a daily basis, you will identify areas where the Client Platform team can drive solutions and partner with your leadership, as well as cross-team and functional partners to define what a solution entails. Additionally, you will roadmap and deliver that work to your team and others. This work will be highly ambiguous, requiring collaboration across our tech stack and influencing others within the company.
We’re happy to share that this is an onsite position in our London office. To help foster team collaboration, we require that employees be in the office a minimum of three days per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday and as needed by your manager or the company. We believe that this working environment facilitates increased work efficiency, team partnership, and supports growth as an employee and organization.
In this role, you will:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable systems that solve key web and mobile client bottlenecks and constraints
- Define and drive Quizlet’s client platform technical strategy, influencing cross-platform teams and cross-functional partners
- Actively provide technical mentorship and guidance to other team members
- Partner effectively with dependent and partner engineering teams, influencing their decisions and designs as appropriate
- Drive incident investigations, post mortems, and retrospectives
- Effectively advocate for long-term improvements to systems and processes
- Implement monitoring and alerting solutions to ensure operational excellence and resiliency
- Stay ahead of industry trends and incorporate new solutions to improve efficiency and reduce costs (both monetary and development/maintenance costs)
What you bring to the table:
- Multiple years of experience in mobile software development
- Proven track record of technical leadership and coaching development teams
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills in cross-platform and backend software products
- Expert-level skills in modern programming languages and some level of comfort with multiple development platforms
- Eagerness to learn, grow, and take on new challenges
- Track record of approaching problems from a system-level perspective (e.g. thinking about how backend, frontend, and data work together as a whole)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills across a range of audiences
Bonus points if you have:
- Track record of identifying and removing team roadblocks before they block the team
- Experience providing technical leadership across multiple teams working on diverse objectives
- Experience in backend and frontend development with an understanding of what it takes to build generic, cross-platform libraries
