Hours: Monday to Friday, 07:00 – 17:00 (1-hour lunch)

The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Plant Fitter to join our team in Derbyshire. This is a hands-on position involving the repair, servicing, and maintenance of a wide range of plant hire equipment both in our workshop and on-site.
As a senior member of the engineering team, the suitable candidate must set high personal standards, take pride in their work, and lead by example. Alongside day-to-day fitting duties, you will assist the Senior Operations Manager in supporting workshop operations, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring that our fleet is maintained to the highest standards. Previous managerial or supervisory experience would be a real advantage, as you may be asked to help coordinate workloads, support apprentices, and assist in the overall running of the depot.
Key Responsibilities
- Service, repair, and maintain a wide range of plant hire equipment (excavators, dumpers, rollers, telehandlers, small plant, etc.)
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults quickly and effectively
- Carry out pre-delivery inspections (PDIs) to ensure equipment is safe, clean, and ready for hire
- Respond to on-site breakdowns, providing a professional and efficient service to customers
- Lead by example, maintaining high standards across the workshop and field service
- Mentor junior fitters and apprentices, sharing expertise and promoting best practice
- Support the Senior Operations Manager in coordinating workloads and workshop organisation
- Liaise with the Depot Yardman to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness, organisation, and safety are maintained across the yard and workshop areas
- Build and maintain excellent relationships with parts suppliers, ensuring best value and service for Total Hire & Sales every time
- Maintain high standards of health & safety and workshop housekeeping
Skills & Experience
- Proven background as a plant fitter/plant mechanic within the hire or construction industry
- Excellent knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability
- Full UK driving licence (HGV licence advantageous but not essential)
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Previous supervisory or managerial experience is highly advantageous
- A proactive approach with the ability to assist management, lead by example, and uphold high standards
