Qualified Guide Dog Mobility Specialist

Guide Dogs for the Blind Association
£34,805 - £38,388 a year
Reading, England

About The Role

This role is for experienced Guide Dog Mobility Specialists. It is not an Academy training position.

Have you previously worked as a Guide Dog Mobility Specialist or Instructor? Whether you're looking for a new opportunity or considering a return to Guide Dogs, we’d love to hear from you.

We have vacancies at various locations across the UK and are welcoming applications.

About the Role

As a Guide Dog Mobility Specialist (GDMS) you’ll be at the heart of our mission – enabling people with vision impairment to live the life they choose. You’ll work closely with our service users, helping to match and train dogs and people together into confident, effective partnerships. Whether it's carrying out in-depth assessments, training our dogs to international standards, or delivering expert guidance to service users, your work will directly support life-changing outcomes.

From the first steps of orientation and mobility assessments to delivering training programmes and providing ongoing support – you’ll be part of a team dedicated to empowerment, mobility, and wellbeing.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you'll be supporting people with sight loss every step of the way – starting with getting to know them as individuals. You’ll carry out detailed assessments to understand their mobility needs, lifestyle, and aspirations, helping determine whether a guide dog is the right path for them.

Once you’ve identified the right match, you'll play a key part in bringing together person and dog – carefully pairing service users with guide dogs based on both practical needs and emotional connection. You’ll train the dogs to be safe, confident and reliable guides, and support the new partnership as it forms, offering guidance, structured training and ongoing follow-up care.

You'll work closely with a dedicated team of colleagues and volunteers, sharing insight, collaborating on outcomes, and always keeping the person at the centre of the process. You'll also mentor and support others across the organisation – whether that’s fellow canine staff, volunteers, or young people with additional needs – sharing your expertise to help everyone succeed.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking an experienced GDMS or GDMI with the skills and heart to guide others towards independence. You’ll bring:

  • A GDMI/GDMS qualification recognised under the International Guide Dogs Federation with recent practice (within 5 years).
  • You must have the Right to Work in the UK as we are unable to offer sponsorship for this role.
  • A passion for person-centred support and a belief in what people can achieve with the right tools and guidance.
  • Experience of coaching and teaching individuals and groups of adults and/or children in practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including travel and occasional out-of-hours work.
  • A UK/EU driving licence

Please see the attached Job Description for a full list of criteria.
