About the role
Applications are invited for the post of Principal Research Fellow within the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London. You will lead the development of a high-level analytic and strategic capability within the UKERC consortium, overseeing the development of UKERC outputs on electricity markets and policy, undertaking and leading modelling and numerical analysis as appropriate. You will contribute to advancing the understanding of future electricity market design options, feeding into and informing UKERC Policy Briefs and Discussion Papers and helping to shape UKERC’s Energy Mission.
What you would be doing
You will deepen UKERC’s research capabilities, complementing existing strengths. You will build on a successful programme of activity focused on risk and investment in energy markets, working to develop analysis to inform decision-making in business and policy, and drive forward the research agenda in this area. You will take responsibility for analytical outputs to support UKERC Missions and cross theme research with a focus on electricity markets and investor behaviour.
What we are looking for
- Significant experience of working with government (e.g FCDO or DESNZ)
- Experience with data analysis and modelling
- Track record of academic and policy publications
- Track record in analysis of the relationship between policy and investment risk
- Ability to develop bespoke numerical analysis/modelling
- Experience of presenting results and findings to specialist audiences at high level meetings, such as with Cabinet Office/No10, FCDO and DESNZ
- Project management experience, preferably through consultancy

You will join the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) which is an independent research centre headquartered at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London. UKERC conducts interdisciplinary research into sustainable future energy systems, with researchers located across 13 different UK institutions.
The post is available on a fixed term basis for 12 months, at 0.2 FTE.
