Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

This new full time post is available immediately on a fixed term basis of up to two years. The post is funded by a project which has an initial phase of 6 months. After successful evaluation, the project and post will be funded for a further 1.5 years.

The post
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on theoretical aspects of a new, quantum enhanced encryption scheme for classical information transmitted via an optical setup. This is a project funded via the Queensland University – University of Exeter partnership, QUEX. The successful applicant will be based at Streatham Campus Exeter. They will work on assessing the security of the encryption scheme. This will include analysing information leak channels in a range of eavesdropping attacks, and characterising the impact of noise on the security of the encryption.

The post will include carrying out analytical work and numerical modelling of quantum and classical information in idealised setup and realistic prototypes. The successful applicant will work closely with the experimental team based in Brisbane, Australia, via online meetings.

About you
The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in authority in open quantum systems or quantum optics and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to independently identify research questions and answer to them, to support their analytical work with numerical simulations coded e.g. in Python, and present their work in written notes and manuscripts, as well as give presentations to the project team and external stakeholders.
