The Role:
We are seeking an energetic, engaging, and compassionate part-time Music Therapist to support the emotional and creative development of students in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) secondary school.
The successful candidate will use music as a therapeutic tool to help students build confidence, improve communication, develop self-expression, and support emotional regulation. Sessions should be interactive, student-led, and carefully adapted to meet a wide range of needs and abilities.
As part of the role, the therapist will also lead after-school music therapy clubs, providing a safe and creative space for students.

Having access to a car is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities:
Engaging and Therapeutic Music Delivery
- Plan and deliver creative music therapy sessions to students across KS3 and KS4, focusing on emotional well-being, communication, and personal expression.
- Use interactive, accessible, and student-centred approaches that cater to a wide range of learning styles and additional needs.
- Support students in developing confidence, social interaction, and self-regulation through music-making, improvisation, and musical play.
- Adapt sessions for individuals and small groups, ensuring therapy is inclusive and tailored to each student’s EHCP goals where appropriate.
Inspiring School Community Engagement
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists, and pastoral teams to integrate music therapy into the wider school support framework.
- Create opportunities for students to share their musical achievements in a safe, supportive environment that celebrates progress over perfection.
Exciting Extracurricular Involvement
- Organise and lead an after-school music therapy club offering accessible creative music activities such as singing, keyboard and drumming.
- Develop group performance opportunities that focus on building confidence, teamwork, and enjoyment of music in a therapeutic setting.
- Mentor students in developing their expressive skills and stage presence while promoting well-being through music.
Innovative Use of Music for Well-Being
- Introduce students to a diverse range of musical styles, instruments, and cultures to broaden their experiences and encourage personal growth.
- Use reflective practice to continually adapt and evolve therapy approaches, ensuring sessions remain student-led and relevant.
What We’re Looking For:Experience & Skills:
- Recognised Music Therapy qualification (HCPC registration desirable or in progress).
- Experience working with children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), preferably in a secondary school setting.
- Strong musicianship and confidence in using multiple instruments therapeutically.
- Ability to lead group music-making sessions that are fun, safe, and therapeutic.
- Confident in leading performances and group showcases that support well-being and community engagement.
