Job Details

We are excited to offer a unique opportunity for a committed and skilled practitioner to join our new Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) team within Fife Council’s Children & Families and Justice Directorate.

MST-CAN is an intensive, evidence-based, community intervention designed to support families where children are at risk due to physical abuse and/or neglect. The programme works intensively with families over a 6–9 month period to:

  • Prevent re-abuse and neglect.
  • Reduce mental health difficulties in parents and children.
  • Increase natural social support networks.
  • Help children remain safely at home.

Rooted in social ecological theory and child development principles, MST-CAN integrates proven interventions for trauma and substance misuse for both adults and children. You will be trained to deliver these approaches as part of a structured and supportive team.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Delivering intensive, in-home interventions to families involved in child protection processes.
  • Managing a small, specialist caseload with high levels of autonomy and support.
  • Completing structured MST assessments and developing intervention plans.
  • Working closely with caregivers and young people to achieve sustainable change.
  • Collaborating with professionals across Social Work, Health, Education, and Justice to ensure wraparound support.
  • Participating in regular MST-CAN training, consultation, and supervision.
  • Contributing to a 24/7 on-call rota to provide responsive crisis support.

What We’re Looking For:

We’re seeking a confident and compassionate practitioner who can engage families facing complex challenges. You’ll need:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification at SCQF level 9 in either Social Work, Applied Psychology, Mental Health Nursing, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in Child and/or Adult Protection processes, including IRDs, Child Plans, attending LAAC reviews and Children’s Hearings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A strong ability to build trust and defuse challenging situations.
  • Experience working with families affected by abuse, neglect, trauma, or substance use.
  • A commitment to evidence-based practice and systemic family work.
  • Flexibility and resilience to support families intensively in their own homes.
  • Ability to travel across Fife.
  • Registration with the relevant regulatory body such as SSSC (within six months of start date for new qualified workers).

This is a rare opportunity to be part of a specialist team pioneering MST-CAN in Scotland, with full training and ongoing development provided.

Before confirming to your appointment, you will be required to obtain Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland and become a member of the relevant PVG scheme.

As this role requires SSSC registration, you will have three months to apply for registration.

If appointed, you must start your application as soon as possible so you're registered within the required six months.

If you need to achieve a qualification to maintain your SSSC membership, information will be provided if you are appointed. You must ensure you complete the qualification within the specified timeframe.

More details are included in the role profile .
