About the Role
As an MST-Psych Therapist, you’ll be central to delivering evidence-based, home and community-based therapy to young people and their families. Working with a small caseload of up to 4 families at a time, you’ll provide support over a treatment period of 4 to 7 months, with an average of 8 families per year.
Your therapeutic interventions will take place in the family’s home and local community, focusing on building positive family dynamics, preventing out-of-home care, and reducing crisis incidents. This includes:
- Flexible scheduling with families, including evenings and weekends
- Intensive support in the early stages of treatment, with daily contact if needed
- Participation in a rotating on-call roster, providing 24/7 crisis response support – primarily by phone, with face-to-face when necessary
You will be supported by a multidisciplinary team and receive regular supervision, training, and guidance from clinical supervisors and a Cultural Advisor to ensure your work is effective, safe, and culturally responsive.

You’ll be expected to work in a culturally safe and competent manner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, including:
- Active engagement with the program’s Cultural Advisor
- Commitment to ongoing cultural training and reflection
- Building respectful, empowering relationships with families from diverse backgrounds
About You
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring:
- Experience in delivering family-based or therapeutic interventions
- Strong engagement and communication skills
- Flexibility to work evenings/weekends and participate in the on-call roster
- Cultural awareness and a commitment to inclusive practice
- Relevant qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling or a related field
MST is a well-researched community-based treatment model directed at youth involved in criminal activities and their families. MST-Psychiatric is an adaption of MST created to serve families with young people at risk of out-of-home placement due to serious behavioural problems and co-occurring mental health symptoms such as thought disorder, bipolar affective disorder depression, anxiety, impulsivity and substance use/abuse. This is an ONGOING Full-Time opportunity based in the East (VIC) within our Clinical Services / FPRR MSTP Program. The position reports to the Manager of MSTP.
Key Selection Criteria:
The incumbent will have:
- Board certification or eligibility in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; Be legally qualified practitioner, registered or registrable with AHPRA without conditions, undertakings or reprimands.
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
- Availability one full day a week to provide services within an outreach model
- Significant clinical experience in treating serious antisocial behaviour in youth including research or training in diagnostic assessment, mental status examinations
